Should the fuel excise cut be extended past July 1?

Diesel went up 36% during the crisis. Loadshift data shows freight rates went up just 16%. Truckies absorbed the difference.

The excise cut expires in two weeks. Some say extend it. Others reckon it hasn't made a real difference anyway and the money should go elsewhere.

The fuel excise cut is set to end at midnight June 30.

From July 1, diesel and petrol prices are set to jump roughly 26–29 cents a litre – and the Road User Charge, a 32.4c/L levy on heavy vehicle fuel, comes back the same day.

That's a lot of extra cents per litre hitting at once.

As much as you can, avoid driving empty.

New data shows carriers have been taking most of the fuel price rise hit themselves.

Diesel went up 36% after the Strait of Hormuz closed – while the average freight rates per kilometre on Loadshift rose just 16%.

That gap came out of carriers’ margins – owner-operators and small fleet businesses who kept Australia's freight moving through the worst fuel crisis in years.

It’s something worth remembering.

The BBC has published a deep dive into the diesel crisis hitting Australian freight – and two of our own are in it.

Loadshift's Alex Randall told the BBC that the government's billion-dollar loan offer won't cut it for small carriers. And Terry Snell, 68, four decades on the road, says he's cut his runs from weekly to fortnightly just to make the numbers work.

We've been on this story for weeks now.

Our staff and carriers have spoken to the Daily Mail, The Guardian, Sky News, WIN News, The West Australian, The Daily Telegraph, the Newcastle Herald and other outlets. The BBC makes it international.

The message hasn't changed. Small operators don't need more debt. They need direct help with fuel costs, and they need it yesterday. Trucks are coming off the road and the supply chain is feeling it.

Diesel theft from trucking yards. That's where this crisis has got to.

Our carrier Madilyn Lostroh from Mal's Haulage had diesel stolen from her yard. She's not alone – we're hearing similar reports from operators across the network.

As our Alex Randall told The Guardian: "“Our drivers are already planning routes around which servos might have stock. Now they’ve got to worry about what happens to the fuel sitting in their own yard overnight.”

Anecdotal evidence of an increase in fuel theft and drive-offs is on the rise, but police data remains unclear
