POSITION STATEMENT

To Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Ngroo Education Incorporated understands the truthful history of this country and the genocidal actions of many of those before us from the earliest steps taken on your land by European people. We understand that this history has caused unimaginable grief and ongoing pain to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

for loss of country, family, language and culture. We understand your continued suffering with declining health, increased incarceration, increased child removals, dislocation in education and generally poorer life outcomes than other Australians. We understand and acknowledge your continuing frustration with policy expectations that over many years have not delivered sustainable social change. To address this apology, we will find ways to move forward together:

We will acknowledge and keep all these disturbing facts in our minds. Avoid using top down approach in deciding what is best to fix this situation

Consult by listening to you, talking with you and then walking together to improve outcomes in education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Acknowledge that Elders and the community best know what will work to deliver positive outcomes, with our role being to assist the process by informing and collaborating with teachers, early childhood education and care services, health service providers and others in the broader community. We promise to walk together with you as you determine the path. OUR HISTORY
Ngroo acknowledges Aboriginal people as the First Peoples and thanks Elders and communities for sharing their land. Budyari yanna muru - go on a good walk path.

Ngroo Education Incorporated began in 2008 with a conversation between a non-Aboriginal teacher, a young Aboriginal mother and an Aboriginal Elder who wondered why there were very few Aboriginal children in the preschool in Western Sydney when there was a large surrounding population of Aboriginal families. This began a long journey of the development of the Walking Together program that continues today with results that have improved the engagement of Aboriginal children in early childhood education across NSW by 50% in those participating services.

NGROO Education Aboriginal Corporation is thrilled to announce that we have successfully received funding through the Tenancy Initiative Fund, proudly funded by Homes NSW.

This generous grant has enabled us to purchase a wide range of new resources for our Family Playgroup, creating even more opportunities for children and families to learn, play, and connect in a welcoming and culturally safe environment.

The funding has allowed us to purchase an exciting collection of resources including arts and crafts supplies, educational toys, puzzles, books, sensory play equipment, and many other fun and engaging activities for children of all ages. These new resources will support children's learning and development while encouraging creativity, imagination, and social interaction.

The response from families has been overwhelmingly positive, with both children and parents excited to explore the new play experiences available at playgroup. The additional resources will help create meaningful opportunities for families to spend quality time together, build connections within the community, and support children's early learning and development.

NGROO would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Homes NSW for their support through the Tenancy Initiative Fund. This investment in our community will have a lasting impact on the families who attend our playgroup and will continue to enhance the experiences we provide for years to come.

We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to seeing our children and families enjoy these wonderful new resources as they learn, grow, and play together.

Thank you, Homes NSW, for supporting our families and community.

Over the last two days Ngroo staff Courtney (Connected Beginnings) & Letitia (HIPPY) spent the last two days with STRONG kids, STRONG future completing the first part of the ASQ-TRAK2 Training.

ASQ-TRAK2 is a developmental screening tool that is completed with parents and carers to ensure children aged 0-5 years are meeting their developmental milestones. Where children may need additional support, the tool helps provide guidance, support strategies and referral pathways for families.

The training group included health practitioners, allied health professionals and community workers who all share the same goal in achieving the best outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families & children.

ASQ-TRAK2 has been adapted to support families in better understanding their child's development and how they can assist them, recognising that parent and carers are the experts in their own child's journey.

The second part of the training involves Courtney & Letitia taking this back to community and completing a workplace practice task with our families before being certified as ASQ-TRAK2 Practitioners.

Ngroo Community Car Seat Day Event was held at Yanala SRAC, and what a fantastic turnout it was in the Doonside community!

So many families came along to have their child car seats safely installed and checked, with support provided by Revenue NSW. It was great to see the community coming together to prioritise child safety on the road.

A special thank you to Sydney Region Aboriginal Corporation for generously providing the space and allowing us to host this important event. We also extend our gratitude to all the services that attended and supported the day.

Most importantly, thank you to all the families who came along, participated, and made this such a positive and meaningful community initiative. ❤️
