From hospital to home — a Sydney spinal cord injury pathway
Jason is 28.
After a serious e-scooter accident, he spent 2.5 months in hospital adjusting to life with a spinal cord injury.
But the hardest part wasn’t the hospital stay—it was what came next.
Jason's life was changed forever and to safely leave hospital he needed:
• fully wheelchair accessible accommodation
• a 24-hour care team
• A clear pathway forward
MediStays have supported his discharge into NDIS Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) in Sydney, close to his existing community, giving him the time and stability to adjust.
From there, Jason transitioned into a High Physical Support (HPS) SDA apartment, with the right care team in place.
Discharge timeline: just 9 days from his NDIS plan approval.
In his words:
“Leaving hospital was the hardest part. MediStays gave me a future when I couldn’t see one myself.”
If you’re supporting a patient in Sydney who can’t return home, we can help create a safe, practical pathway forward.

Did you know? Australian trauma registry data shows a rapid rise in e-scooter related injuries following the introduction of shared schemes, with hospital admissions increasing by more than 300–380% in some jurisdictions within a single year.
Head and facial trauma are the most common serious injury types, accounting for up to half of presentations in major trauma centres. While most injuries are orthopaedic, traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of severe outcomes and hospital admission.
Spinal injuries like Jason’s are less common but occur in high-energy crashes, often as part of multi-trauma presentations. Across Australian studies, helmet non-use and intoxication are the strongest predictors of severe injury.
