Yarra City Council has been fighting against updated flood maps.

Today, The Age reports on the cost of that delay - people have bought homes, they're being built, but could be caught in updated flood maps.

Instead of acting as a blocker, Yarra should support the adoption of updated flood maps.

"The most important thing to remember is that advocacy is local...What really makes for change is talking to the people in your community about how you want to see your city improve. There are other people near you who want the same things that you do. So join your local cycling or safe streets advocacy group, but most importantly, make sure that whenever your city holds public consultations for new bike lane plans, you show up to cheer them on. Who gets a residential parking permit?

This diagram uses data from council, ignoring business, visitor, and special permits. Two-fifths of households in Yarra aren't eligible for residential parking permits, and the proportion will grow over time as more apartments are built.

The upcoming Kerbside and Parking Management Strategy will certainly have to look at how public space is used, balancing the needs of the 'have-permits' with the 'have-nots'.

Plenty of people need to drive and park, so we need to design for cars in our dense inner city. Drivers are looking for short travel times, consistent travel times, and predictable places to park. Strategies are to separate movement roads from shopping streets, understand that slower is faster, support proximity, and use pricing to ensure that a parking spot is generally available.
