This counterfeit cash didn’t make cents at the border. 💵

ABF officers have stopped more than $2 million in counterfeit Australian and Canadian banknotes from coming into Queensland. This is the largest detection by a single importer in the state, after 12 air cargo consignments linked to the same consignee were inspected.

The result comes as ABF detects a sharp increase in attempted counterfeit currency importations. By identifying and stopping these notes at the border, our officers are helping protect Australian businesses, consumers and the wider community from financial loss.

Every year around this time, one very unwelcome passenger tries to hitch a ride to Australia in shipping containers: the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). And every year, DAFF puts the whole industry on notice.

BMSB season kicks off 1 September and runs through to 30 April. If you're importing from a target risk country during that window, here's what you need to know:

✅ Certain goods (machinery, tools, vehicles, parts and more) shipped from target risk countries need offshore treatment before they touch Australian soil
✅ Approved treatments include fumigation, heat treatment, and a few other DAFF-approved options
✅ Untreated cargo can be refused discharge, re-exported, or hit with costly onshore treatment and delays - nobody wants that
✅ Just a heads up - your overall shipping cost will be slightly higher during this period due to fumigation costs

FREIGHT RATES: 1-14 AUGUST UPDATE

Here's what's happening with China-Australia sea freight rates for the first half of August.

The short version: rates are actually down slightly on the big carriers (COSCO/OOCL/ANL), while the mid-tier carriers are holding steady. Don't get used to it though - this is a brief calm before peak season properly kicks in from mid-August.

Why? A typhoon smashed through Shanghai and Ningbo, delaying vessels 7-10 days and quietly pulling capacity out of the market. Combine that with a planned sailing cancellation, and you've got 7% less effective capacity floating around - even with two new shipping services launching. Basic supply and demand: less space, rates don't fall through the floor.

What this means for you:

If you've got Christmas stock to move, now's a smart window - before peak season demand pushes things up from mid-August
We're not expecting a sharp spike, but we're also not expecting rates to keep dropping

📦 Good news for anyone importing from China right now.

The freight rate hikes carriers flagged for mid-July? Not happening!

The market copped an unexpected surge in cargo through late June, but a few extra vessels landed in time to clear the backlog - so instead of the USD 500-1,000/container increases that were on the table, rates have actually held steady.

Translation: if you've got stock sitting in China waiting to move, now's a solid window to get it on the water without copping a rate hike.

If you're importing from China, now is the time to start planning ahead.

The global shipping market is facing increasing pressure due to a combination of strong demand, vessel capacity constraints, ongoing Red Sea disruptions, port congestion, and an earlier-than-usual peak season.

What does this mean for Australian importers?

✔️ Vessel space is becoming harder to secure.
✔️ Cargo rollovers and delays are becoming more common.
✔️ Some shipping services are already heavily booked.
✔️ Planning shipments at the last minute could limit your options.

Our advice? Don't wait until your goods are ready to ship.
