Staff Profile - Stella.
Birthplace/hometown:
Rescued from Maryborough Victoria.
How long have you been at Ablett’s?
I started work as an eight week old on December 3rd, 2008. I’ve been here 15 years!
15 years is a long time, tell us about the changes you’ve seen.
Where do I start? Well, Tony Pryce was in Ops and a young Johnny Woodward had just started in the workshop not long before me. There was Coca Cola everywhere and that’s where I got fat eating cheeky unwanted lunches. Coke ended and I got my Kelpie physique back. Staff have come and gone, then come back again. EGRs have come and gone for good. I played snake on my mobile, now I watch HD footy on it. Trailers are longer and higher. I used to pay $3.50 for a schooner, now I pay $12. I’ve witnessed the arrival of about 100 pieces of new equipment. I’ve seen staff joy, staff sorrow, staff covid, and seven prime ministers. I’ve seen a lot.
Are there any changes that you don’t like?
Yes. The new carpark. That’s where the grassed area used to be. Lying there in the middle of a spring day was heavenly. That’s where I did my best work.
What’s your favourite job at Abletts?
I really enjoy post journey inspections of the vehicles. I’ve pulled some really impressive meals from under the equipment. Everything from kangaroo to deer.
Tell us about your role as Work Health and Safety advisor. How have you ensured zero workers compensation claims for yourself?
I was raised in a truck yard, work in a truck depot, and never been run over. A trick I was taught was to never go under a trailer chassis, parked or not, always go around. I still have absolutely no idea how I’m still here! Trucks come in and sometimes I don’t even move until they beep the horn. In my younger days when I lived at the workshop I’d sleep in middle of the yard. Thankfully, trucks would maneuver around me.
Favourite food?
I love cooked prawn heads, and I also love stray dead rabbits, preferably with about 3-5 days decomposition.
Now that you’ve settled into a part-time position, what are your retirement plans?
A tree change. I prefer the company of women, so I’m really looking forward to more time in Binalong at my ‘rancho-relaxo’ with more women.
