They say Toowoomba & surrounds has four seasons: fog, wind, sideways rain and that one lovely Tuesday in September.

Our cucurbits aren't big fans of that line-up. Cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, zucchini and squash are sun lovers, and when the fog rolls in and parks itself for a week, they start looking a bit sorry for themselves.

So we've done something about it.

We've invested in new grow lights at the nursery, so our cucurbit seedlings get the sunshine they need even when the sky won't play along. That means stronger, more compact, more consistent plants heading out to your farm, whatever the weather's up to.

For anyone curious how it works:
• The plants get 14–16 hours of light a day, then lights off. Even seedlings need their beauty sleep, and cucumbers in particular get cranky and yellow without a proper dark period.
• Full-spectrum LEDs run cool, go easy on the power bill and don't need a jumper.
• Blue light keeps seedlings short and sturdy, and red light gets them growing. Think of it as a balanced diet.
• We match the light with warmth, water and nutrition. Plenty of light in a cold shed just gets you very well-lit, very unimpressed plants.

Did you know the humble pumpkin isn't actually a vegetable? Botanically, it's a fruit – and a member of the Cucurbit family, alongside cucumbers, zucchini, rockmelon and watermelon.

Pumpkins have been cultivated for over 7,000 years, with origins tracing back to Central America, long before they became a spring and summer planting staple in Australian paddocks and greenhouses.

Tomatoes and cucumbers are two of the first spring crops to hit their stride, and this Tomato, Cucumber & Feta Salad is the easiest way to make the most of them.

Ingredients:
🍅 3 ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
🥒 2 Lebanese cucumbers, sliced into half-moons
🧀 100g feta, crumbled
🌿 A generous handful of fresh dill, roughly chopped
🍋 Juice of 1 lemon
🫒 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
🧂 Salt and pepper, to taste

Method:

Combine the tomato, cucumber and dill in a bowl. Whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, then pour over the salad and toss gently. Scatter the crumbled feta over the top and serve straight away.

Crisp, fresh and ready in ten minutes flat – proof that spring produce doesn't need much help to taste great!

Spring has officially arrived, which means your garden is likely asking for a little more attention this month.

Here's what to focus on in September:
🌱 Finish planting summer crops – tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber and zucchini can all go in now that frost risk has eased in most areas
🌸 Feed your soil – a dose of compost or aged manure now will set your summer crops up for a strong start
🐛 Stay ahead of pests – aphids and caterpillars love new spring growth just as much as you do, so check under leaves regularly
💧 Water consistently – warmer days mean thirstier plants, so keep an eye on soil moisture as temperatures climb
🌱 Mulch garden beds – lock in moisture and keep weeds down before the warmer months really kick in
