Using a jet ski with a mounted Single Beam Echo Sounder (SBES) has several advantages over traditional surveying methods. First, it is a cost-effective solution as the jet ski is a relatively cheap platform compared to other survey vessels. Second, it is more manoeuvrable than larger vessels, which makes it ideal for surveying shallow water or surf zones. Third, it can cover a large area quickly, which makes it an efficient method for conducting surveys.

Back in 2011, we worked on a major project burying 6 high voltage cables from La Perouse to Silver Beach, Botany Bay NSW.

The project involved positioning the trenching machine in real-time over the cables on the seabed. Once complete, we conducted hydrographic Sub-bottom surveys to check the depth below the seabed. Really interesting project!

Heavy work has started on one of the biggest projects undertaken on the Brisbane River. The first of 200 support piles have been driven into the riverbank at Hamilton, ready for the widening of Kingsford Smith Drive. Max Futcher reports.

I recently completed the Remote Pilots Operators Certificate (ReOC), it’s an extension to my Remote Pilots Licence (RePL) and allows us to conduct aerial surveys using drones in more areas and enables us to apply to CASA for approvals, such as flying at night, beyond visual line of site, flying in controlled zones etc.

It also comes with the title of Chief Pilot and as such I feel the need for a call sign. I was thinking Maverick or Goose, of course my wife Mandy thinks the latter . . .

Hydrographically Surveying the Adelaide River, Northern Territory, Australia.

Astute Surveying was contracted to hydrographically survey The Adelaide River some 160km from the river mouth to the furthest reaches our survey vessel could travel. Undertaking this type of survey was quite different to our regular surveys and logistically difficult! Also this River is famous for the number of Crocs living in its waters

The main challenge with undertaking this type of survey is the remoteness of the site. The mouth of the Adelaide River is located 90km from Darwin (by boat) with no launching ramps or accommodation close by. As such we decided to hire a live-aboard vessel and utilise this vessel as our mother ship. The mother ship was used to travel to site with our survey vessel in tow. The mother ship worked out great as we could survey from start to finish with little or no back tracking. Also there was a great benefit in having our meals prepared and ice cold beverages once we tied up for the night . . .

This trip turned out to an experience of the “real Northern Territory”, 2/3 of the way down the river was a small island called Goat Island (an Adelaide River oasis). The island had a bar/restaurant called Casey’s Bar with accommodation (the bar was named after Casey the wild/pet croc that lives in the river). Very friendly hospitality and a nice change to sleeping on the boat with an interesting menu board.
