Where Elixir Drills & Eagles Dare

In late July, John McCormick and Doug Gillespie drove to Lorelle 3H in rural Queensland for a meeting with Elixir CEO Stuart Nicholls and COO Kingsley Rudeforth. The aim of the trip was to see first-hand how Elixir was progressing with their Taroom Trough development and learn what technology R&D Solutions may be able to provide to assist operations going forward.

Following a site induction and field orientation, Stuart walked us through the block giving an in-depth operations update covering formation characteristics of Lorelle 3H, concluding with a condensate sample being shown. To say it was very informative visit is an understatement, and we were grateful for the opportunity.

When Stuart finished his talk as if on cue, all eyes turned skywards as two magnificent Wedge Tail Eagles provided a flypast rounding off a fantastic visit.

This is a busy period at R&D Solutions Canning Vale Service Centre, with our team preparing additional Lee Energy Systems Gator Tools for shipment and riser equipment for upcoming offshore deployments.

Maintaining attention to detail remains essential as we meet the stringent requirements of third-party inspectors, logistics schedules, safe loading practices, and dispatch preparation.

A sincere thank you to our workshop team for their continued professionalism, commitment, and quality workmanship. Their efforts have been outstanding.

Recently, Rob Wills of Western Well Tools and Giles Doll of R&D Solutions were on-site in rural Queensland, working in challenging conditions that included floods, flies, and cyclones. Their task was to install and deploy Non-Rotating Drill Pipe Protectors (NRDPs) for an operator.

Once installed, the tools were run as part of the drilling string to reduce torque, protect drill pipe hard banding, and minimise casing wear during drilling in a deviated well. The images show Rob keeping the flies at bay with a face net before he and Giles paused for a quick photo to mark the successful completion of Phase 1 – installation.

NRDP systems have been successfully deployed across multiple operations in Australia and form a key part of R&D Solutions’ life-of-well success story, consistently delivering reliable performance over the years.

Putting the Bite into Gator Operations

When the call went out for non-pyrotechnic Plug and Abandon tools to assist a customer, our field techs and service centre team went into action.

After a briefing on what was needed, JHA complete and tasks assigned, tools were selected for the task including, Mega Packers for annulus sealing, Gator tools for perforating large bore casing and a Releasable Packer for isolation, all were collated at short notice, complete assembly built, pressure tested and inspected before being loaded into baskets for shipping offshore. Whilst there was the obvious need to meet deadlines no corners were cut on safety or equipment build diligence, and we were very proud to witness a first-class team professionally go about their business.

As the year draws to a close, operations continue unbated. In late November R&D Solutions were busy sealing wells with KCI ECO – Seal ensuring rock solid integrity pressure tests were achieved. For years, R&D Solutions has partnered with KCI known globally for providing reliable pressure integrity sealant for wellheads, gate valves and associated wellhead and tree components. Working with this team really does emphasise the ‘Solutions’ part of our company brand.

The images captured show Field Technician Kevin Saunders deploying ‘KCI ECO-04 Seal’ material and conducting 5,000 psi sealing integrity tests which were achieved on every well in the remote Australia outback.

Anchor Hanger Deployment

Recently, one of our Field Technicians Mike Pearson paused to capture these amazing images of a rig he was working on which contrasted against the diming hues of light in the remote outback. Mike was also able to get a closeup of the Anchor Hanger he was running which stood out against the deep purples of the sun disappearing over the horizon.

Safe to say after only seconds it was back to work, the hanger shown was safely run to depth and set in a textbook operation.

On return to camp, Mike stopped again to catch a picture of the rig in full darkness, a contrast to the darkness which had since enveloped the surrounding area.

The remoteness of the areas R&D Solutions works in reminds us of the need to keep our staff safe and contactable, thanks to modern IVMS and satellite communication that has become standard. R&D Solutions Celebrates 16 Years of Success and Growth

Earlier this month, the team at R&D Solutions came together to celebrate a significant milestone—16 years of dedicated service and continuous growth. The occasion was marked with festivities across various locations, highlighting the company’s journey and future aspirations.

At the Perth office, staff enjoyed a celebratory moment with Russell and Doug sharing a laugh as they cut the cake, sipping coffee and indulging in party pies alongside their colleagues. The atmosphere was lively, reflecting on the years gone by and the many achievements along the way.

Similar celebrations took place in Canning Vale, Brisbane, and Chinchilla, where the spirit of camaraderie and sharing a joke was on display. Russell described the journey as a "roller coaster," acknowledging the many challenges and successes that have shaped the company.

Both Russell and Doug emphasised that the backbone of any thriving organization is its staff. “Great staff are what make any organisation flourish,” they noted, as they highlighted the vital role of the Service Centres and Field teams who serve as the face of R&D Solutions to customers.
