Our Sales/Operations Manager, Darren Gomes, recently spent time at the GEISMAR Rail Industry Technologies & Services UK facility to be trained in the calibration of Track Gauges.

Track Gauge calibration is a vital process of testing and adjusting the tools used to measure the exact distance between railway rails. It ensures the Gauges remain accurate, ensuring trains stay safely on the tracks - regular calibration prevents derailments caused by wide or tight rails.

Railways operate on strict tolerances. If the gap between the two tracks is even slightly off, trains can experience rough rides or, worse, derailment. Because track inspectors rely on handheld or digital Gauges to spot any flaws, those Gauges must be accurate!

Darren kindly sent through the images shown and a summary of his training experience in the UK:

🔹Set up calibration tables to calibrate the Emerald Gauge, Amber Track Gauge and Amber Trolley Gauge
🔹Ran through calibration on all Gauges using Geismar XL calibration software on a lap top connecting via Bluetooth to Gauge
🔹Ran through visual and manual inspection of all Gauges using specific check sheets created by Geismar UK to streamline inspection process. Also acts as a quality control and traceability QA for each customers Gauge, along with a calibration certificate.
🔹Disassembled then reassembled all Amber Gauges, Garnett Gauge and manual RCFF and RCA Gauges to get an idea on repair and common faults with equipment.
🔹Carried out manual calibration on RCFF and RCA Gauges.
🔹Was shown through the Geismar UK workshop where current equipment was being stocked and where the new Hilux rail vehicle was being fitting out for a customer. Also, saw their current projects and modifications being carried out on Geismar products to meet UK standards and regulations.

🚨Safety: miscalibrated track Gauges or geometry trolleys can lead to false readings of track irregularities, risking train derailments.
🚨Compliance: railway authorities require the routine Gauge calibration to ensure they are in good working order and are traceable to national standards

GEISMAR Rail Industry Technologies & Services – EMERALD 1435 Towed Track Recording Unit

This unit is designed to measure the geometric parameters of the track towed either by road-rail vehicle or an inspection lorry at speeds up to 20 km/h (12 mph). The concept of the trolley makes it easy to pass through switches and crossings.

The Emerald allows you to save time by intervening closer to your worksites with a road-rail vehicle and to work continuously over long distances through high memory capacity. The display and recording of accurate geolocated measurements on the tablet enable intuitive operation.

In addition, data is managed efficiently as the tablet is connected to the trolley by wireless technologies and its simple, robust and ergonomic design allows a single person to deploy it on site thanks to a Forklift pocket system.

🌟 We are very pleased to welcome two Swan View Senior High School students to do work experience with us this term.

One of the students will be working with our Store person Matt to learn everything there is to know about this role.

Duties may include:
👉Receiving, handling, and dispatching of goods
👉Managing stock control
👉Maintaining records of inventory, and ensure efficient storage and retrieval of items
👉Organizing inventory
👉Packing and sending orders

The other student will be supervised by our Wheelshop Supervisor Marcus and tasks may include:

👉How to practice clear communication of safety and technical information.
👉How wheels are inspected, maintained, repaired, and replaced.
👉How to do hands-on tasks such as pulling bearings; cleaning axels; using a high-pressure cleaner; and using basic hand tools.

All of the above will be done under supervision of Matt and Marcus and other relevant Key Source Rail personnel.
