There is something truly magical about transforming an ordinary book into a piece of art. My latest Altered Book project is inspired by the timeless story of Alice in Wonderland and combines mixed media techniques, vintage elements, nature-inspired textures and whimsical storytelling.

Creative Chipboard Techniques and Ideas

One of the most distinctive features of this altered book is the creative use of chipboards. Rather than serving as simple embellishments, they became important storytelling elements within the project.
The clock-face chipboard was divided into sections and positioned as a bridge across the center of the book. This symbolic design represents the passage from the ordinary world into Alice's magical Wonderland.
Several mixed media techniques were used to transform the chipboards:
Acrylic paints for custom color effects

Layered textures and dimensional surfaces
Dry embossing on the Alice chipboard with clocks (Tim Holtz embossing folder)
Deco Sand for a weathered and aged appearance
These techniques demonstrate how versatile chipboards can be in mixed media art. Instead of acting only as decorative accents, they can become key focal points that help tell the story of a project.

Don't be afraid to experiment with chipboards by cutting, layering, embossing, painting, and combining different mediums.

This layout features my beautiful granddaughter, whose joyful smile and infectious laughter make the title “Laughter makes the world a happier place” simply perfect for this precious photo. The mini titles “happy” and “cherish” add sweet little reminders of the joy she brings and how deeply she is loved. For this design, I began by priming all the chipboard pieces with white acrylic paint before colouring them with a sponge brush using Americana Acrylic Paints. To complete the layout, I added art stones to create gentle dimension and texture, followed by delicate white gesso splatters to bring a soft, subtle finish to the page.

Garden Fun is the unique layout that shares with us today with her mixed media style. See Kerstin's inspiration and how she has created her amazing page ...

This scrapbook theme captures the simple joy of kids exploring the garden. The highlight, of course, is always playing with the garden hose—it usually ends in a water fight.

I designed the theme with a worn, vintage look and a touch of steampunk, as you often see in my work. I love these beautiful sunflowers from DA, Focus on bright, natural colors like green and yellow.

In the end, this scrapbook layout isn’t just about gardening—it’s about curiosity, creativity, and connection. It’s about those carefree moments when time slows down, and a simple splash of water can turn into pure happiness.

Another way I like to alter chipboard is with lots of gesso.
Here I have painted the trees with white gesso, perhaps 2 thin coats to give a good
Prep surface.
Then you can colour the trees with either copic pens or even green shimmer dusts. Dry well
Then when dry, mix a teaspoon of white glitter with a teaspoon of gesso, to form a kind of lumpy snow product. You can then use a palette knife to add to the trees in rows like real snow would look.
If you want, you can sprinkle with a little more white glitter for a very snowy glittery look.

This layout features my beautiful granddaughter, Mila when she was only a few days old. She is now turning 10, and it is hard to believe how quickly the years have passed. Mila, watching you grow up is one of my greatest blessings. You are my precious, radiant, and delightful girl, with a playful spirit, a kind heart, and a beautiful strength that shines from within. You are deeply cherished and loved simply for being you.
To prepare all the chipboard elements, I first primed them with a layer of white gesso and then painted them using Americana acrylic paints.
How amazing is this layered chipboard title? The layered design adds beautiful depth and dimension to the title. The pieces can be left raw or customised with your favourite paints, inks, or embossing powders. I decided to paint the shadow piece pink and the words white, allowing the title to stand out beautifully against the background.
The Wordpl@y elements were lightly dry brushed using a sponge brush, carefully avoiding the engraved text so that the words remained crisp, clear, and easy to read.
I also snipped the Foliage and Seedlings into smaller pieces and tucked them throughout the flower cluster to add extra layers, texture, and dimension. I love how these little details help bring the floral cluster to life.

DIY Mixed Media Home Decor - Where is my ship??

If you love creating textured mixed media projects, this one is full of inspiration!

I transformed an oval wall décor piece into a weathered pirate-themed artwork using chipboards, rich rust effects, and a subtle touch of steampunk.

By layering texture pastes, metallic paints, and rusty patinas, I created an aged, dark vintage look. The dimensional chipboard embellishments add depth and tell their own story, while the combination of industrial details and nautical elements gives the project a unique character.

Mixed media is all about experimenting, combining different materials, and letting creativity lead the way. Don't be afraid to embrace texture, imperfections, and rusty finishes—they often create the most beautiful effects.
