Improving Efficiency at Parkes Sub Terminal 🚂🌾

Our Network Operations team has been working with our great partners, Pacific National and GrainCorp, to bring a long unused crossover at the Parkes Sub Terminal back to life — after being out of action for decades!

This upgrade means shunting can now be carried out much more efficiently, helping to reduce grain loading times and support smoother operations each day. The terminal is a key link in supplying grain to the Manildra Group Flour facility, so this improvement is a big win for the whole supply chain.

A massive shout out to our Bathurst maintenance crew, who refurbished both crossovers and installed a new Type 45 Thornley lever to get everything back up and running.

One Team keeping the Country Regional Network moving on behalf of Transport for NSW!

🚆 A behind the scenes look inside our Network Control Centre in Orange!

Our Network Control Officers (NCOs) work around the clock to keep the Country Rail Network (CRN) moving safely and efficiently on behalf of Transport for NSW. Here’s a look at the systems they use every day:

📍 1. Rail Vehicle Detection System (RVDS) Control Board
This board manages the colour light signals, motor points and track circuits between Wallerawang and Orange, plus Parkes Yard.

It’s one of the busiest parts of the CRN, and our NCOs use it to set signals and points for train movements — all without needing to speak directly with train crews.

📍 2. Train Order Working (TOW) Control Board
This system covers 93% of the network, using locomotive GPS and electronic train orders to keep trains safely separated across long distances.

Some CRN locations, like Narrabri, have no fixed signalling at all, so our NCOs carefully log every movement on the graph to ensure a safe operating environment.

📍 3. Training Our Future NCOs
Our newest NCO School began in mid February, with six trainees completing 14–15 weeks of intensive training before joining the 24/7 roster that manages rail movements across NSW.

A big shout out to our hardworking NCOs who help keep communities connected across regional NSW. 👏💙

Rail R U OK? Day reminds us that safety isn’t just about tracks and trains — it’s about people.

Today, we’re checking in with our mates on site, in depots, and in the office, because mental well-being is just as important as physical safety.

Taking the time to ask, “R U OK?” can make a real difference. A conversation could change a life. 💛

🚧 Parkes to Manildra Shutdown – Coordinated Delivery in Action

Teams across the Country Regional Network came together for the Parkes to Manildra shutdown in mid-March 2026.
This major possession brought multiple workgroups, Protection Officers, Network Control and project supervisors together to safely deliver critical upgrades and maintenance across this key section of track on behalf of Transport for NSW.

🔧 Works across the corridor included:
• Level Crossing Upgrade – Manildra Yard
• Re-railing – Manildra
• Culvert Renewal – Bumberry
• Rerailing Through the Level Crossing – Bumberry
• Cutting & Embankment Works – Mandagery
• Level Crossing Refurbishment – Parkes Yard
• Turnout Refurbishment – Parkes Yard
• Resurfacing across multiple worksites.

These coordinated works help keep the network safe, reliable and ready to support the communities and industries that rely on it.

📍 Planning and Control Coordination
Our teams used a dedicated planning room featuring the full Parkes–Manildra corridor layout — complete with worksite boundaries, scheduled tasks and possession documentation. This central hub ensured clear communication and safe, efficient delivery across all worksites.

🤝 A Network-Wide Effort
With multiple workgroups operating simultaneously, collaboration between supervisors, Protection Officers, plant operators and project teams was essential.
These efforts reflect the values that guide every shutdown we deliver:
• Safety First — every shift, every site, every person home safe
• One Team — depot, project or office, everyone plays a part
• Customer Impact — our work keeps communities connected
