Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre

Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre OPEN: 10-4 weekends and public holidays During WW11 the township of Nhill hosted an RAAF training base.

The NAHC was formed to highlight the over twelve thousand young Australians who trained at the Nhill Air Base during WWII, as well as remember the history of aviation in Nhill. Over 10,000 young Australians trained in Nhill from 1941 to 1946. Until now this has never been officially recognised and has been largely unknown recent generations. The aim of the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre formed in

2009 is to highlight, recognise and promote the important contribution made within the township of Nhill to the WW11 effort. The main feature of the Nhill aviation heritage Centre is an Avro Anson aircraft. These aircraft were used extensively for training purposes such as astro navigation, bomb aiming, strafing and radio communication. With the aid of the Nhill community and Government grants a new hanger has been erected to house the Avro Anson at the Nhill Aerodrome. The Avro Anson's restoration will be a complete rebuild to taxiing status with an estimated 10,000 working hours to get to this point.

A new display at the NAHC will bring back memories of an era when Morse code was used to send messages around the world , well before the days of mobile phones

Not only was Morse code used for personal messages such as birthday and wedding greetings or announcements about the arrival of new babies, but it also played a crucial role during wartime communications. For instance during World War II, relatives would receive news of the death of a loved one via a telegram - these messages were relayed from the battlefields by Morse code and then printed for delivery.

Morse code was also vital in emergencies. The SOS distress signal (three dots, three dashes three dots) was chosen because it was simple and unmistakable for operators in urgent situations.

Furthermore, Morse code was essential for aircraft naviaators, who had to be able to tap out at least 15 words per minute to qualify for their roles.

Learn more about Morse Code at the NAHC and test your skills at decoding it.

There’s always something happening out at the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre… and this week is no exception 👀

While most of us were going about our week, Craig Henley, Rob Lynch and Len Creek have been hard at work giving the boundary fence at the Aeradio Building a fresh new look ✨

This fence isn’t just any fence either, it was kindly sponsored by the family of the building’s last manager, John Rowe, so we reckon it deserves to be kept looking its best.

Now here’s something you might not know…

The Aeradio Building itself has been lovingly restored by our amazing volunteers and is the only one left of the 13 Aeradio stations built across Australia in the late 1930s!

These stations were the early days of what we now know as air traffic control, pretty incredible when you think about it.

And the best part?
It’s right here in Nhill… just under 2km from the centre.

👉 If you’re planning a visit:
Pop into the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre (open 10am–4pm on weekends) and one of our volunteers will happily show you around.

Or give us a call on 0490 657 770 to organise a visit during the week.

We’re also open over the Easter break (just closed on Good Friday) perfect for a family outing 🐣✈️

Come and see a little piece of history being kept alive… one project at a time.

Last Sunday was a special one at the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre ✈️

Volunteers and guests came together for our annual Information Afternoon, and there was plenty to see, hear and be inspired by.

President Rob Lynch unveiled plans for the proposed Foyer Extension, giving a glimpse into the exciting future of the Centre, while also showcasing the new displays that have been carefully brought to life over recent months.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was hearing from Merv Schneider, who shared fascinating stories from his time as a WW2 Flight Navigator, including his experience using Morse Code in the air. Truly incredible to hear history firsthand.

We also heard from Len Creek, who gave an update on the restoration and repainting of our beloved Tiger Moth, a project many of you have been following closely.

It’s an exciting time for the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre, and we’d love for you to come and experience it for yourself.

🕙 Open every weekend | 10am – 4pm
💲 Adults $12 | Concession & Groups $10 | under 16 FREE

Come along, step back in time, and be part of preserving these incredible stories ✈️
