Celebrating 60 years!

16 September 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Steve Padgett OAM receiving his Commercial Pilot Licence.

Steve’s aviation journey began at 17, when, on 1 January 1964, he received one of the few flying scholarships the RAAF offered through the Air Training Corps (ATC).

While training, Steve became dux of his course and was promoted to the commissioned rank of Cadet Under Officer. Through the ATC, he represented 9 Flight Canterbury on numerous flights in RAAF aircraft, including travelling to Malaysia aboard a C-130 Hercules as part of a cadet exchange programme, where he flew in various aircraft types on active duty, including Royal Air Force aircraft.

Steve went on to become a flying instructor before launching his own flying school and air charter company, marking the start of a career in business aviation that has now spanned more than six decades.

Over the years, Steve has created opportunities across flight training, jet charter, aircraft sales, regional airlines and advanced simulator training.

He founded Sunshine Express Airlines in 1998, flying between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane for Ansett Airlines, before expanding to other SE QLD destinations. When Ansett ceased operations, Qantas negotiated to continue the Sunshine Express service.

Steve also co-founded and chaired Alliance Airlines, which grew from two aircraft to a fleet of more than 80 jet airliners operating in airline service with Qantas, Virgin and others. He chaired the board from its inception until his retirement in 2025.

On the Sunshine Coast, Steve has been a permanent tenant and in business at the airport for more than 30 years. He established three large hangars and related facilities, including a major Training and Simulator Facility for Singapore Airlines. Today, the complex is home to Flight Options and the Sunshine Coast Jet Centre.

Steve’s contribution to Australian aviation has been recognised with the Order of Australia Medal, Fellowship of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Australian Bicentennial Award from the Honourable Company of Air Pilots.

Approaching 80, Steve continues to work full-time and looks forward to many more years working alongside his team of aviators, staff, colleagues and friends.

Happy Father’s Day!

This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating all the dads who inspire, encourage and guide the next generation – sometimes even inspiring them to follow in their footsteps in the aviation industry.

Pictured is our very own Flight Options instructor, Brian (right), with his son Mike (left), who also works in aviation. Mike is a third-generation Qantas Captain, following in the footsteps of both his father, Brian, who also flew for Qantas, and his grandfathers, who were professional pilots – one of whom flew for Qantas and the other for the Royal Air Force.

Mike has flown a range of aircraft throughout his career, including the A320, B737, A330 and now the B787. Two generations, one shared passion for flying – and a family aviation legacy spanning three generations.

Happy Father’s Day to Brian and Mike, as well as all our other Flight Options dads, including Steve Padgett OAM, Phil Laffer, Rick Heaton, Peter Choyce and new dad Lachlan Campbell.
