Owners worry about the engine. On most boats the engine block is the most reliable thing aboard — what strands a boat is everything around it. A battery that quietly lost capacity, a stuck float switch, a corroded terminal, a filter that finally blocked. None of it announces itself, which is why it's the easiest work to skip and the most reliable to regret. A winter of sitting is harder on fuel and batteries than a summer of running. Same harbour, same salt, different wear. A power boat and a yacht of the same length need genuinely different plans — and most maintenance advice was written about the yacht. A motor boat carries more systems, each on its own interval, none of them aligned. It goes out more often for shorter runs, then sits for weeks, which is hard on fuel and harder on batteries. A haul-out is the one window where the parts of a boat that matter most are open to a proper look. Hull, running gear, through-hulls, anodes — all guesswork afloat, all obvious in the sling. The hull also tells you how the last year actually went: where she sat, how she was used, what the electrical side has been doing. The aim isn't to be back in the water quickly. Every year the first warm weekend beats the winter list to the finish. The boats that are ready in spring are the ones that started the work now — rig checked and tuned, hull clean and antifouled, engine serviced, lines and safety gear gone over.
