Compass Expeditions

Compass Expeditions Our Adventure Motorcycle Tours are some of the most spectacular journeys on this planet – join us

Compass Expeditions was formed off the back of an incredible fund-raising ride from London to Magadan, in Siberia back in 2005. We started with one Toyota Landcruiser as a support vehicle, five bikes and a lot of enthusiasm. Our expeditions are the experience of a lifetime, crossing continents to explore some of the most unique and beautiful places on earth.

🗺️ MAJOR EXPEDITION 🗺️

Not for first timers! These are some of the most challenging (yet most rewarding) rides on the Compass books, and everyone who's undertaken one of them agrees on one thing - they are unparalleled.

At only (!) 85 days, Ultimate Africa is the “call of the wild” where we go on safari in iconic national parks seeing the Big 5, search for chimpanzees in remote only-accessible-by-boat reserves, and trek to come face-to-face with the rare mountain gorillas (possibly the most amazing wildlife experience on earth).

We share time with the meerkats, walk amongst seals and watch whales breaching in the waters off South Africa’s stunning Garden Route.

But it’s not only wildlife that takes our breath away; we also ride a plethora of ancient landscapes of vast pans, epic deserts, towering sand dunes, lofty passes, deep jungles, and roads offering inspiring ocean vistas.

It doesn’t end there, stay with us in safari tents while listening to the roar of lions overnight or the endless grunting of hippos from our lodges, dine with us from atop an escarpment mesa overlooking ancient valleys far below or from a restaurant perched high above Lake Tanganyika.

This experience rich expedition dares to travel off the well beaten tourist path and explores the very best of Africa, this is Ultimate Africa!

Memories from a past Annual Compass Reunion - who remembers where and when this one was?

One of the best parts of travelling with Compass is the friendships that are formed along the way.

The Reunion Weekend is an opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new friends, share stories from recent adventures, and spend time with people who share the same passion for travel and adventure as you do.

Whether you've travelled with us once or a dozen times, we'd love you to join us in Gippsland this November.

With only 10 weekends to go until the 2026 edition, places are filling up quickly. We'll see you there!

We're known as the South America experts - and with good reason.

South America is a continent of absolute superlatives. The world’s greatest rainforest, largest rivers, longest unbroken chain of mountains, all exist here, and we haven’t even mentioned the worlds largest salt flats, driest deserts and fantastic ruins.

San Martin de los Andes, San Pedro de Atacama, Ushuaia. Never heard of these places? How about Uyuni, Paraty or Lago Espero? These are just some of the places that feature highly on our list for the South American continent.

Yet this is a continent that still remains largely unexplored by today’s adventure bikers. There is hardly a corner of North America that hasn’t been explored to death or a road that hasn’t been trampled by a million bikers before, yet South America is screaming out to be “discovered”.

Here's two of our favourite routes from our spellbinding Wild Patagonia tour (pictured above in slides 2 & 3 respectively):

No. 1 – Camino Austral
Where: Chile
Begins: Peurto Montt
Ends: Peurto Yungay

This is a region of Fjords, mountains, glaciers and rare forests, but be prepared to get wet, very wet. The region experiences over 2000ml of rain per year, but the ride is worth it for the unbelievable scenery. The road is referred to as “Camino Ripio” or “paved with gravel” and you will be riding amongst stunning fjords, past waterfalls, turquoise lakes, hanging glaciers and icefields before stopping off at one of the few small communities surviving in the wonderfully remote part of Chile. Don’t worry about the wet, you will dry out in one of the numerous wonderfully warm resorts at days end.

No. 2 – Ruta 40
Where: Argentina
Begins: Salta
Ends: Ushuaia

Technically speaking this legendary road RUTA NACIONAL 40 starts in Salta, Northern Argentina and finishes in Rio Gallegos in the South of Argentina and becomes RUTA 3 on Tierra del Fuego, but for the purposes of this list we shall include the ride to the very end of the road at Ushuaia as RUTA 40. This is “the mother road” of South America and has it all, but primarily we are concerned with it as it cross the lonely windswept vastness of the near mythical Patagonia. The rider will have to contend with ferocious winds and vast distances on “ripio” riding through the lands of expansive Estancias, sweeping views and a horizon that seems to go on forever. Those who stick it out will be amply rewarded as they cross onto Tierra Del Fuego and ride the stunning mountain region riding to the very end of the Pan American Highway and RUTA 40 in Tierra Del Fuego National Park, just south of Ushuaia. This is a ride of accomplishments.

Great snaps, kind words!

"A great tour operator. I just finished their Cape Town to Victoria Falls tour which had a great balance of riding and excursions. Each day had a highlight, staying in quality lodges with great food options. Communication / organisation of the tour was all smooth and efficient." – Ellen L, July 2025
..where is your next adventure going to be? If you want to follow in this lady's footsteps (okay, tire marks to be exact), Cape Town to Victoria Falls runs again in July 2027. Full info:

🗺️ MAJOR EXPEDITION 🗺️

"We did this similar tour with Compass Expeditions in 2016 --- 128 days circumnavigating South America and it most definitely was life-changing as we called it 'our escape into retirement'." – Donna Torche

"We did the Ultimate South America trip 102 days in 2024. Changed my life. (learn some Spanish). Right now i’m on a flight to Mongolia for Compass adventure #3. You only live once. It might as well be an awesome ride!" – Olaf Moon

South America, home to the world’s longest mountain range, largest rainforest, driest desert, highest navigable lake and incredible Incan ruins all await us on this epic motorcycle tour.

During this incredible adventure we will experience the otherworldly Salar de Uyuni, explore Machu Picchu, gaze in awe at the Foz do Iguazu waterfalls, see glaciers, fjords and rare forests of Patagonia and experience some of the world’s most iconic cities.

From the mythical Patagonia to the beat of Brazil, the dawn-lit ruins of Machu Picchu to the rocky slopes of Galapagos, South America is alive with sights, sounds and experiences unique to this continent.

Canyons, Dunes & Falls kicked off three days ago as our intrepid expeditionaires began their journey into Africa!

Leaving behind the bright lights of Cape Town, it was only a two-hour drive to the raw and wild beauty of the iconic Cederberg: 4WD heaven!

Our first night on the road was the small town of Clanwilliam located in the Olifants River valley in the Western Cape, followed by a wonderful day of remote 4-wheel driving through the epic desert landscape of the Namaqualand. Next, an ancient quiver tree forest in this tough desert environment before arriving for our overnight stay at Springbok.

Next, we depart South Africa and enter Namibia at Vioolsdrift before hitting the dirt again of the awesome Ai Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. We lodge at the quirky Canyon Roadhouse, a must see when in the region and the perfect place to rest our heads before a sunrise excursion.

With almost a fortnight more to go, this is truly a cornucopia of incredible new experiences!

Back in Cusco after a full day in the Amazon (the world’s mightiest rainforest and biodiversity hotspot with a plethora of wildlife indigenous to this region).

Having been guided by locals spending a fascinating day with them learning about life in the Amazon, the forest, and its abundant wildlife,
we explored Puerto Maldonado located in the mighty Amazon Basin on the confluence of the Madre De Dios and Tambopata Rivers and close to the borders of Brazil and Bolivia.

After taking a longboat with our river guide for some hours before reaching the wonderful river ecolodge deep within the breathtaking wilderness of the Amazon for two nights, our final day sees us take an included flight from Cusco back to where this incredible adventure began, Lima, where we shall enjoy our final group dinner and reminisce over the last 2 incredible weeks. As Peru Explorer comes to a close, we will enjoy the memories for a lifetime!

The same forensic attention to detail which won us a Tours of a Lifetime Award from National Geographic for our Patagonian tours on two wheels has been applied to our four wheeled approach.

Iconic Patagonia – a wild, isolated, and mythical expanse that encompasses the far south of Chile & Argentina. Known as Patagonia’s most beautiful road, we traverse the legendary Carretera Austral, a route that delves deep into a remote region that was largely disconnected from the outside world until the 1980s. It’s an unmatched landscape of rare forests, hanging glaciers, breathtaking turquoise lakes, and stunning waterfalls. Stay overnight at a working “estancia”, cross beautiful fjords on ferries that form part of the road network, drive the iconic Seven Lakes Drive north of the breathtakingly situated town of Bariloche and so much more. This 4WD adventure is simply overloaded with scenic superlatives. Highlights:

• Breathtaking Futaleufú
• Ventisquero Hanging Glacier
• Enchanted rainforest
• Queulat National Park
• Towering mountains of Cerro Castillo
• Endless fjord scenery of the Carretera Austral
• Driving the legendary Ruta 40
• Picture perfect Bariloche
• Seven Lakes Drive

Our tours always include a little something out-of-the-ordinary.

Today, as our Wonders of Norway tour draws towards its conclusion, we're stopping at Graceland. No, not THAT Graceland - the Danish one!

Our last day will see us open the throttle as we cross out of Denmark and enter Germany but not before visiting this surprising Elvis Museum.

We arrive in the city of Hamburg late afternoon where we can celebrate what must be one of the most scenic rides on this planet.

Wonders of Norway is back in July 2027 - see you there!
