Local Transit was proud to be part of this year’s Try Before You Ride event alongside Victoria’s public transport operators and the , helping passengers build confidence with accessible travel. ♿🚆

As a Work-Integrated Social Enterprise (WISE), we create meaningful employment for migrant and refugee drivers while supporting passengers who rely on mobility devices to travel safely and independently. Our work brings together community, inclusion and transport, and events like this show what’s possible when organisations collaborate. 🤝

With mobility scooters and devices becoming larger and more varied, knowing what fits, what’s safe and how to move confidently through the network is more important than ever, especially for older community members and people who may not travel the network often.

A big thank you to Metro Trains Melbourne and the for supporting free travel to and from the event, making it easier for seniors and community members, including those less confident travelling alone, to attend, practise and ask questions. We’re grateful to play even a small part in supporting safe, confident and inclusive travel across Victoria.

Get a Free Return Bus Ride to Try Before You Ride – Accessible Public Transport Event
📍 Southern Cross Station | 🗓16 October 2025

Metro Trains Melbourne and the City of Melbourne are offering FREE door-to-door (point-to-point) transport for participants attending the Public Transport Try Before You Ride event.

🚐 If you or a family member use a wheelchair, mobility aid, or experience physical, mental, or linguo-cultural restrictions, you don’t need to worry about how to get there — professional drivers will pick you up from your home and return you afterwards.

At the event you’ll learn:

✨ How to safely use mobility aids on trains, trams, buses, and taxis.

✨ Tips for boarding, using ramps and lifts, and securing your device.

✨ What size and weight limits apply for mobility devices.

✨ How high-capacity wheelchair-accessible vehicles support larger devices.

This is a supportive, hands-on opportunity to gain confidence and independence using public transport. Everyone is welcome to come along and give it a go.

Transport is an important part of freedom and independence, allowing people to participate in society. For this reason, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides transport assistance for eligible people with disability who cannot use public transport.

Local Transport is a registered NDIS transport provider. We provide general transport for NDIS participants, as well as specialised transport for participants to attend a place of education or employment or the community.

Local Transit prides itself on safety. Our professional drivers ensure that passengers in wheelchairs are loaded carefully and that their wheelchairs are secured at two points in the front and two points at the back to ensure they have a comfortable and safe ride.

Don't we look small?

Local Transit continues to transport passengers from cruise ships docked at the Melbourne Passenger Terminal in Melbourne for Intercriuse. We transport passengers in our 22 seat wheelchair-accessible buses from cruise ships to nearby transport hubs.

Local Transit participated in the upgrades to Melbourne’s City rail loop in 2023. This was the first time that this rail loop had been closed in 40 years. This job for Metro Trains Melbourne involved 30 drivers driving accessible vehicles each day and night – providing a total of 4000 of work for our drivers.
