The “most photographed barn in America” began with a simple purpose: sheltering horses.

Thomas Alma Moulton started construction of this barn in 1913 as part of his homestead. Over the next 30 years, the barn evolved piece by piece alongside the growing needs of the Moulton family. The hayloft was added in 1928, followed by lean-to sheds on the sides in the late 1930s. What began as a practical working structure became one of the most iconic and recognizable buildings in Jackson Hole.

More than 100 years later, the barn still stands as a testament to the hard work that went into homesteading in Wyoming. Its continued preservation is the result of decades of care by the Moulton family, park staff, and numerous volunteers who repaired, reroofed, rechinked, and stained the barn. Interior supports and cables now help keep the historic structure standing strong.

Today, photographers from around the world visit Mormon Row to capture the T.A. Moulton Barn beneath the Tetons. But preservation is about more than protecting old buildings. It’s about protecting stories.

Historic Preservation Month reminds us that places like this help us connect to the people who lived here before us — the hardships they faced, the lives they built, and the legacy they left behind. Every weathered board has a story to tell.

Perched atop a rugged mountainside, these striking ruins make for a spectacular picture📸 and are well deserving of their place on the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles list. 🏯

🌄 After a 30-minute hike up the hillside from the Naegi bus stop, visitors are rewarded not only with the immense boulders that form the castle walls, but also with the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area from the summit.

🏛️ Don’t miss a visit to the nearby Naegi Toyama Memorial Museum to learn more about the fascinating local history!
