In Kerala, travel slows to the rhythm of the water.

The backwaters are not a single destination, but a network of canals, lagoons, and villages where daily life unfolds along the water’s edge. Movement is gradual. Distances feel different. What matters is not how far you go, but how you experience the journey.

A houseboat cruise offers a quieter way to engage with this landscape. You pass coconut groves, local homes, fishing nets, and small jetties, all part of a system that has existed for generations. Meals are prepared on board, and the day is shaped by light, weather, and the pace of the waterways.

It is a contrast to the intensity found elsewhere in India, and often one of the most grounding parts of a wider journey.

India is not defined by heat alone. In the hills, the pace slows, temperatures drop, and the landscape shifts entirely.

Hill stations sit at higher elevations across the country, offering cooler climates, forested surroundings, and a more relaxed rhythm of travel. Originally developed as summer retreats, they remain some of the most comfortable regions to visit during warmer months.

Key hill stations to consider:

📍Shimla - Colonial-era town with easy access from the plains
📍Manali - Mountain scenery with access to valleys and high passes
📍Darjeeling - Tea estates and Himalayan views
📍Munnar - Rolling plantations and wildlife in the Western Ghats
📍Ooty - Lakes, gardens, and an established hill station charm

Each offers a different perspective, but all provide a contrast to the intensity of the plains.

Every journey is experienced differently. What shapes it is not just where you go, but how it is planned and who guides you along the way.

These reflections offer a clearer sense of what travelling through India can feel like when the details are considered, the pace is right, and the experience is tailored to you.

South India is one of the country’s richest regions for birding, where landscapes, habitats, and local wildlife converge.

Thattekkad’s riverine forests and Ooty’s shola landscapes are home to endemic species such as the Nilgiri flycatcher, Malabar trogon, and black-and-orange flycatcher, alongside forest and wetland birds rarely seen elsewhere.

High-altitude grasslands in Munnar and Eravikulam National Park offer early morning sightings of elusive birds, with Nilgiri langurs and Malabar giant squirrels adding context to the ecosystem. Chinnar’s open forests and dry grasslands bring raptors like crested serpent eagles and brahminy kites into view, completing a diverse avian experience.

For those who travel with curiosity and patience, South India offers more than birdwatching: it is an immersive encounter with nature, culture, and seasonal rhythms.

In Meghalaya, the landscape is not simply something to observe. It shapes how the region is built, navigated, and experienced.

Defined by sustained rainfall and limestone terrain, this part of North East India operates differently from the country’s more familiar routes. There are a few monumental landmarks. Instead, the environment itself determines how people live and move through the region.

Living root bridges continue to grow and adapt over time. Waterfalls and cave systems reflect ongoing geological processes rather than fixed attractions.

Daily life, including matrilineal traditions among Khasi and Jaintia communities, is closely tied to this setting.

Meghalaya offers a more landscape-driven journey, where understanding the environment becomes part of the experience.

Darjeeling’s earliest tea harvest takes place in early spring, but May is when travellers begin to experience it at its freshest 🍃

The leaves are lighter, more delicate, and produced in smaller quantities compared to later harvests. Visiting during this period means seeing the estates in full activity while also tasting the newest batches.

It is a different kind of travel experience, connecting landscape, agriculture, and daily life in a way that goes beyond sightseeing.

For those interested in slower, more detail-oriented journeys, this is where Darjeeling stands out.

Rajasthan is often considered one of the most accessible and comprehensive regions for a first journey through India.

Beginning with the Mughal landmarks of Delhi and Agra, the route moves into a landscape defined by former kingdoms, desert terrain, and long-standing trade routes. Cities such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur each present a different perspective, from structured urban design to fortified hilltop architecture and lakeside environments.

What distinguishes Rajasthan is not a single landmark, but how these elements combine. Architecture, daily life, and regional identity remain closely connected, particularly through markets, craft traditions, and restored heritage properties.

For travellers with limited time, this structure allows for a broad yet cohesive understanding of North India.

What if instead of building bridges that decay, we GREW bridges that get stronger with time? 🤔

That's exactly what the Khasi people of Meghalaya figured out 500+ years ago.

In one of the wettest regions on Earth where monsoon rains destroy traditional structures, they discovered a brilliant solution: living root bridges.

Here's how they work:

🌱 Guide young rubber tree roots across temporary bamboo scaffolding
🌿 Wait 15-25 years as roots anchor into soil and stone
🌳 The roots thicken and intertwine into stable walkways
💪 The bridge gets STRONGER with age and use

The result? Bridges that:

- Can hold 50+ people at once
- Require almost no maintenance
- Last for CENTURIES
- Thrive in heavy rainfall
- Are still used daily by local communities

The most famous is the double-decker root bridge in Nongriat - reached after descending 3,000+ stone steps through lush rainforest.

But Meghalaya offers so much more:

🌊 Waterfalls plunging 300+ metres
🕳️ Limestone cave systems
🌧️ Some of the highest rainfall on Earth
👩 Matrilineal culture (women inherit property)

It's one of India's most fascinating - and least visited - regions.
