Melbourne was one of the first cities to mandate the 8-hour working day. Starting a global movement in 1856. The number, 888 8 hours' labour, 8 hours' recreation, 8 hours' rest, is still emblazoned on trade union buildings in the CBD near the monument to commemorate the achievement.
