Metro is proud to once again support the Big Freeze campaign in 2026.

Across our network, we’ll be sharing tribute imagery at key stations, encouraging frontline staff to wear Big Freeze beanies, and making a contribution in honour of Neale Daniher’s legacy and the ongoing fight against motor neurone disease.

Have you checked out the new and improved Mordialloc Station?

Passengers on the Frankston line now have a brand-new station and rail bridge, with lift and stair access, a passenger waiting room and bathrooms.

The new station is designed to match the bayside atmosphere of the area, and finishing works will continue around the precinct until late 2026.

The new station will allow for more services on the Frankston line, with 12 extra weekly services and higher peak frequency.

Think you’ve been to a lot of stations? Gary has worked at nearly 85 of them!

Essendon Station Officer Gary has been part of the railways his whole life, growing up right next to the tracks. He has a strong family connection with his mother working as a Gatekeeper on the Upfield Line and his father as a ‘ganger’.

Gary joined the railways as a 15-year-old in 1970 and believes he has worked at close to 85 stations in his time. He remembers lighting kerosene lamps twice a week and working in the scorching heat and bitter cold as a Gatekeeper.

For him, the most rewarding part of his railway journey has always been the people he works with.

✅ 500+ hours of planning
✅ 144 hours of round-the-clock works
✅ 726m of new rail installed
✅ 700 tonnes of new ballast laid
✅ 227 tonne bridge deck installed

We recently had a furry visitor on our rail network after this pup got off the lead near Regent and made its way onto the elevated rail towards Reservoir Station.

Trains were stopped while the team worked with Victoria Police to catch the dog we have since named Quentin.

We’re glad this story had a happy ending, and it’s a reminder to all dog owners to make sure your pooch is kept on the lead around the rail network.

You may have seen this striking artwork while travelling through the Elizabeth Street pedestrian underpass at Flinders Street Station. But have you ever wondered about the story behind it?

Walert Walert, meaning possum skin cloak in Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language, draws on the deep cultural significance of possum skin cloaks for First Nations peoples.

More than garments, possum skin cloaks carry story, identity, kinship, ceremony and connection to Country. Each cloak is created piece by piece, with markings that represent a person’s identity, Country and the pathways that connect them.

In the same way, each glass panel in the underpass can be seen as one part of a larger cloak. Individually, each panel carries its own story. Together, they form a collective narrative of connection, belonging and resilience.

Created by artist Bitja, Dixon Patten, of Bayila Creative, the work invites passengers to pause, look closer and reflect on the stories held within the places we move through every day. To learn more about the meaning behind Walert Walert, read the full artwork narrative in the images below.

A small gesture, but a big smile 😊

Robert, one of our Authorised Officers, has been brightening game days by giving AFL cards to kids heading into Marvel Stadium.

He sorts them by team to make sure he has the perfect card, and said the reactions from the kids are amazing (high fives included!).

Robert said if he could have any player's autograph on a gold foil card, it would be Richmond legends Kevin Bartlett or Francis Bourke.
