Happy Father’s Day!

This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating all the dads who inspire, encourage and guide the next generation – sometimes even inspiring them to follow in their footsteps in the aviation industry.

Pictured is our very own Flight Options instructor, Brian (right), with his son Mike (left), who also works in aviation. Mike is a third-generation Qantas Captain, following in the footsteps of both his father, Brian, who also flew for Qantas, and his grandfathers, who were professional pilots – one of whom flew for Qantas and the other for the Royal Air Force.

Mike has flown a range of aircraft throughout his career, including the A320, B737, A330 and now the B787. Two generations, one shared passion for flying – and a family aviation legacy spanning three generations.

Happy Father’s Day to Brian and Mike, as well as all our other Flight Options dads, including Steve Padgett OAM, Phil Laffer, Rick Heaton, Peter Choyce and new dad Lachlan Campbell.

We hope you all have a wonderful day with your families. 💙

No matter how far we roam, there's no place like home. ✈️

Aviation can take you to some incredible places, but there's nothing quite like our home on the Sunshine Coast.

With beaches stretching along the coastline, rainforests nearby and mountains scattered across the region, it's a natural playground waiting to be explored.

And at the heart of it all is Sunshine Coast Airport, where Flight Options is proud to have been based for almost 20 years.

We're incredibly lucky to call the Sunshine Coast home.

What's your favourite place to visit on the Sunshine Coast?

Meet Karen, Flight Options' Training Administrator.

Karen joined Flight Options in 2023 and has more than 20 years of aviation experience, including flying and training roles across the Middle East.

"I've been fascinated by aviation for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is a primary school project that led me to write to airlines around the world to learn more about the industry.

"To my surprise, airlines including Swissair and Lufthansa replied with information packs and personal letters of encouragement. They wished me luck and said they hoped to receive an application from me one day. Looking back, those responses played a small part in inspiring the career I've enjoyed ever since.

"What first attracted me to aviation was the idea of a life less ordinary. Aviation has introduced me to exceptional people and experiences, and I've always loved how connected the industry is. Everyone has a story, and if you chat long enough in the tearoom or galley, you'll usually discover a connection somewhere along the way.

"The best part of my role at Flight Options is the people! Working with such a great team makes every day enjoyable.

"One of my favourite Flight Options memories comes from when I first joined the company. It was the inaugural Noosa Concours, and we hosted an event in the hangar, surrounded by spectacular aircraft and classic cars. To top it all off, we were treated to an incredible aerial display by Matt Hall Racing. It was certainly not a bad introduction to aviation in Australia!

"Outside of aviation, one of my biggest passions is wine. I'm an avid wine taster and am currently studying for my French Wine Scholar certification — an interest that was sparked during a previous role as a hospitality trainer for a major airline.

"Looking ahead, my goals are pretty simple: keep travelling, meeting interesting people, experiencing new things and learning along the way.”

Thanks for sharing your story, Karen. We're lucky to have you as part of the Flight Options team!

What do our students say about training with us?

We're always proud to hear from pilots who have completed a course at Flight Options.

Nathan Dixon recently completed his Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) course, including training in our A320 simulator. Here’s what he had to say: “I absolutely loved my time completing the MCC course in the A320 simulator. Brilliant instruction and very experienced people working alongside you.”

His feedback highlights what we aim to provide every student: experienced instruction, practical training and an environment where pilots can build the skills and confidence needed to operate effectively as part of a multi-crew team.

Thanks for the kind words, Nathan, and congratulations on completing your MCC! 👏

You might have the flight hours and technical knowledge, but airline recruitment is about much more than flying ability.

Here are three common mistakes we see candidates make during airline interviews:

1️⃣ Not using the STAR method.

Behavioural questions are designed to understand how you've responded to real situations. A structured STAR response (Situation, Task, Action, Result) helps you communicate clearly, confidently and with purpose.

2️⃣ Missing opportunities to demonstrate Crew Resource Management (CRM).

Airlines are looking for more than technical competence. Be ready with examples that showcase communication, teamwork, decision-making and situational awareness—both in and out of the cockpit.

3️⃣ Not researching the airline.

Every airline has its own culture, values and operational focus. Taking the time to understand the organisation you're interviewing with demonstrates professionalism, preparation and genuine interest in the role.

Preparation builds confidence.

With more than 200 years of combined aviation experience, the Flight Options training team has developed an Airline Assessment and Interview Preparation Course that draws on real-world airline recruitment, training and operational expertise.

Over 1.5 days, you'll refine your interview technique, learn how to structure strong STAR responses, prepare your CV, build your aptitude assessment skills, and complete an airline-style simulator assessment profile designed to mirror those used during airline recruitment.

When the right opportunity comes along, make sure you're ready to make the most of it.

37,000 feet. Oxygen masks are on. What happens next?

Our latest Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) course participants, Nathan Dixon and Andrew Chan, had to navigate this exact scenario last week as part of their training.

Learning how to handle challenging scenarios as a team, while maintaining communication and coordinating a response that delivers the best outcome for passengers and crew, is exactly what the MCC course is all about.

The MCC allows pilots to build confidence and practise their responses in a controlled environment before advancing to airline training and operations. The outcome is to help them become the very best pilots they can be.

Great work, Nathan and Andrew! 👏
