My very first taste of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon was at an International Cabernet tasting organised by Cape Mentelle, back when I’d just started working there.

One of the handful of wines in my life that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. That intensity of fruit, its purity, and then this perfectly integrated structure and tannin that just made everything feel inevitable. I remember thinking: this is what new world Cabernet can be.

Fast forward to now, and I’m bringing guests through Moss Wood’s winery on private tours, hearing the stories behind the philosophy, walking the property, understanding why these wines taste the way they do. Suddenly it all clicks.

When I started Bonjour Margaret River earlier this year, I had no idea how quickly it would feel real. But watching it come to life, tour by tour, guest by guest, has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

🍇 Veraison is well underway in Margaret River’s vineyards.
This magical transition marks the moment when grapes shift from hard, green berries to their final ripening colors. Red varieties blush with deep purples and blues, while white grapes turn translucent and golden.
For winemakers, veraison signals the countdown to vintage. But it’s more than just a timeline; it’s when the vines redirect their energy from growth to ripening, and sugars begin their slow accumulation in the fruit.
Walking through the rows right now, you’ll see this transformation happening berry by berry, cluster by cluster. Some varietals are ahead of others with Chardonnay often leading the way, while Cabernet Sauvignon takes its time.
It’s one of the most photogenic moments in the wine year, and a reminder of why we’re so connected to the rhythms of the vineyard here in Margaret River.

Did you know the Margaret River is only 60 kilometers long?

This modest waterway was called Wooditchup by the Wadandi people - named after Wooditch, an ancestral spirit who carved the river’s path during the Nyitting (Dreaming). When European settler John Garrett Bussell arrived in the 1830s, he renamed it after Margaret Whicher, possibly a childhood sweetheart back in England.

Flowing from the Whicher Range through ancient karri forests and limestone caves, the river is home to the hairy marron, the third-largest freshwater crayfish in the world, found nowhere else on Earth. These critically endangered creatures can grow up to 40cm long and are covered in distinctive hair-like tufts.
