Take a Breather in Mountford Park

Right in the heart of town, this leafy spot is perfect for a picnic, a lazy afternoon read or stretching your legs on a long drive. With shady trees, a bandstand, and historic touches throughout, it’s a peaceful reminder of days gone by.

💡Did you know? The park was named after Stanley Mountford, a long-serving Water Conservation and Irrigation Commissioner who helped shape Leeton’s early days.

Grab a takeaway coffee from a local café and take five under the trees — it’s the kind of moment country towns are made for.

When Henry Lawson Came to Leeton to "Dry Out" 🍷🚫📖

Did you know legendary Australian poet Henry Lawson was sent to Leeton in 1916 to dry out from his well-known struggles with alcohol?

At the time, Leeton was a prohibition town, meaning no alcohol was sold within its limits. The idea was that the isolation and fresh country air would help Lawson recover. He spent time at the Hydro Hotel (which was originally built as a temperance hotel – no booze allowed) and his Daalbata Rd house is open during the yearly Australian Art Deco Festival for tours and talks.

And here’s a twist – prohibition didn’t stop locals from getting creative. Secret backyard stills, bootleggers, and even "sly grog" operations popped up over the years. Some say a few old buildings still hold hidden compartments from those days. 👀

But… let’s just say Lawson wasn’t too thrilled about his time here. He found the heat unbearable and the strict rules a bit much. His letters from Leeton show frustration, but they also capture the early days of the town and the pioneering spirit of the irrigation settlers.

Now, Leeton boasts fantastic local wineries, bars and distilleries, embracing the region’s rich agricultural roots.

Ever heard any cheeky prohibition-era stories? Share them in the comments! ⬇️
