Christmas stock hits Melbourne wharves in September and October. Yard space is being decided now.

Container rates are running roughly 60% higher than this time last year and carriers are pulling sailings to hold the market. That pressure lands here as bunched arrivals, tight wharf slots and unpack queues right when everyone's Q4 stock shows up at once.

Every October, some importers learn their regular depot is full. The unpack that normally takes two days takes a week. Stock sits in a queue while the shipping line's detention clock runs.

The importers and forwarders who avoid that lock in unpack and storage capacity in August, share their Q4 forecasts early and agree turnaround expectations before the rush.

Datts plans peak season with clients now, so when the spring surge arrives the space, equipment and people are already committed.

BMSB season starts 1st September 2026.

DAFF changed 3 things:
- Safeguarding Arrangements Scheme: removed.
- Rolled Goods Policy: removed.
- Ethyl formate: approved as an onshore treatment option, alongside heat, methyl bromide and sulfuryl fluoride.

Measures apply to target goods shipped on board between 1st September 2026 and 30th April 2027.

The rest holds. Break bulk on flat racks and open-tops still has to be treated offshore, with no onshore fix once it lands. Certificates only count from providers on the DAFF approved list.

Every season someone finds out about a change after the container has sailed. Then it sits, and the demurrage clock runs.

Call Datts and you will not get a phone tree.

Before freight is collected or delivered, the yard is already moving. Equipment is checked, containers are prepared, trailers are positioned and the day's movements are reviewed.

This work happens before most people see the operation, but it sets the standard for everything that follows. Good operations are not built on reacting quickly. They are built on being ready before the work begins.
