Week 6 has come to an end.
Gerald is just hitting 50 sessions trained at Honbu. We are both feeling great and learning so much.
Thursday night we were invited out for dinner and drinks after training with Ogura shihan, Kurihara Kazuaki sensei, Hakizume Kaishi sensei and Hakizume Yoshi sensei and some Honbu dojo members. Great food, drinks and conversation.
Thursday also saw my cousin Sam and her daughter Addison leave us to head back to Sydney. It was great having them here.
Today we were given a special invitation to attend an exhibit at the Tokyo National Art Centre where a friend had two paintings being exhibited.
Tomorrow will be rest, recover and house cleaning day.
The Autumn joint training camp starts next week so we have a lot of friends arriving in Tokyo. It will be so great to see everyone from Australia and around the world.

End of week 5 here in Tokyo.
Lots of amazing training this week as always.
We are both very happy that we remain injury, blister and pain free.
Today we ventured out to Todoroki ravine. About 1.5hrs away.
It’s the only ravine in all of the 23 wards of Tokyo.
It’s lush and green and has a river down the middle. Theres ancient tombs and shrines. Theres an ice cream shop and a tea house.
A great day out from the bustling city.

We’ve been in Tokyo for a month now.
We are well and truly settled in to life here.
Gerald has trained 36 sessions at Honbu and I’ve done about half that.
We have walked just over 150km.
We have had many dinners and drinks with friends.
We can’t wait for the next month which will bring many friends from Australia and around the world for the Autumn training camp.
We have had my cousin, Sam and her daughter staying with us this last week and look forward to having them back after they explore other parts of Japan.

We definitely felt this one. Woke us up. Japan had multiple earthquakes daily but most you don’t even feel.

Today we met some friends at one of Tokyos most famous yakitori restaurants, Iseya Sohonten. First opened in 1928 as a butcher shop now doing only yakitori and doing it extremely well.
David has lived in Tokyo for over 20 years and we first met him about 4 years ago when he first started training at Honbu as a white belt and is now a shodan. And his lovely missus Mika.
Then off to a bar for drinks and to meet up with an old karate buddy of Gerald’s and a good friend of David’s. Thanks Richard Hessleton for the beers and the conversation.
Mika, thanks for putting me on the right bus to the airport and David for getting Gerald home safely albeit very late 🤣

Always great to catch up with friends in Tokyo. Makarand and his son Mihir are members of JKAA Castle Hill, NSW dojo and have recently moved to Tokyo. We trained at Honbu dojo under Hirose sensei then enjoyed dinner together.

The typhoon passed and the skies were clear and blue this morning.
So we headed out for a trip to Kawagoe. Along with half of Tokyo. Haha.
It was so packed we didn’t hang around long and decided we would go back another day when it wasn’t a public holiday.
Rookie error.
Finished the day with dinner at a local place.

We’ve been in Tokyo for 3 weeks now.
We have really settled in to life here.
Training daily, after training drinks, sleeping in, morning exercise in the apartment, daily 5km walk, good food, Netflix.
It has rained the last two days thanks to the typhoon passing off the coast.
What else to do but walk in the rain to our local shops for supplies.

Tonight after training we were invited to attend dinner to celebrate the 2026 All Japan Champions.
Kurihara Hidemoto sensei - men’s kata champion
Hirose Hikaru - men’s kumite champion
Akiyama Kyoko - women’s kumite champion.
It was a wonderful night of celebration and friendship. Great food and many drinks.
