Teenagers charged after reckless jetski behaviour on the Nerang River during National Safe Boating Week

Two teenage pwc riders have been tracked down by police following a harrowing incident on the Nerang River Surfers Paradise on Sunday afternoon.

Viral footage circulating across Australia shows two jetskis repeatedly buzzing, spraying and bullying a small tinny before it capsized, throwing its occupants - two boys aged just 10 and 14 years and their belongings into the water.

Thankfully, both boys were reportedly uninjured and were wearing lifejackets. Police attended and assisted with helping the boys to safety and recovery of the tinny.

Following investigations and assistance from the community, police identified the jetski operators as two teenage boys aged 15 and 16, who have not been named. Both are now facing charges of dangerous operation of a vessel and assault, while their passengers have not been charged. There are now calls for the teenagers pwc licences to be permanently cancelled.

This incident could have ended very differently and those charges could have been manslaughter with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment - adult crime, adult time!

A small vessel can be destabilised very quickly by the wash and actions of another vessel, putting lives at serious risk. Regardless of whether you’re operating a jetski, tinny or larger boat, our waterways are there to be enjoyed by everyone — boaties, jetski riders, paddlers, anglers and families.

There is absolutely no place for reckless, harmful behaviour that puts other peoples lives at risk - especialy children.

With new safety laws reportedly being proposed to tackle reckless jetski use on Gold Coast waterways, incidents like this highlight why responsible behaviour and enforcement matter.

The timing couldn’t be more relevant. This week is National Safe Boating Week. An initiative of the Australian and New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group (ANZSBEG), this is a timely reminder that if your lifejacket isn’t on, it can’t save your life.

🐋 WHALE SEASON IS HERE!

There’s nothing quite like being out on the water and seeing these magnificent gentle giants along the Queensland coast.

For us as boaters, the best whale-watching experience is a respectful one. Give whales the space they need to behave naturally — and sometimes, if we keep our distance, they’ll choose to come closer to us. 🐋💙

If you encounter a whale, remember:

🛥️ Boats: stay at least 100m away
🚫 Prohibited vessels such as jet skis and hovercraft: stay 300m away
🚁 Aircraft and helicopters: stay 500m away
🎮 Drones/remotely piloted aircraft: stay 100m away
🏄🏼‍♀️ People in the water: do not enter within 100m of a whale

⚠️ CAUTION ZONE — 300m

The area within 300m of a whale is a caution zone. Vessels must operate at no more than 6 knots within this zone.

🚫 NO-APPROACH ZONE — 100m

Within the caution zone are sensitive no-approach areas around the whale. Boats must not enter within 100m of a whale.

Let’s enjoy these incredible visitors while giving them the space and respect they deserve.

Couldn’t find any useful info from the powers that be, so here’s the heads-up for anyone planning to get the tinny wet this weekend

🌬️ First up, we’ve got some decent blows on the way. Strong winds are forecast to belt through consistently from Sunday morning right through to Wednesday, so check the forecast, secure your gear and don’t get caught with your pants down offshore

🏃‍♂️ Also, there’s a running race on this weekend, which means access to some of our public boat ramps along the event course will be blocked. Yep… because apparently ratepaying residents launching a boat on their days off takes a back seat 🤯

Plan your run accordingly, shipmates. Check your tides, check the weather, and if you’re heading out, keep the shiny side up

This World Oceans Day, the theme "Reimagine" invites us to chart a better course for the future. By protecting and restoring our waterways, islands, wetlands, estuaries and coastal environments, we can strengthen ecosystem health, build climate resilience and safeguard the natural treasures that make the Gold Coast a boatie's paradise.

Sadly, many of Australia's iconic marine species are now sailing into troubled waters, with increasing numbers listed as threatened with extinction. That's why it's all hands on deck to do our bit for the waterways and oceans we love.

⚓️ Advocate for better water quality and maintenance of our waterways
⚓ Stow your rubbish and dispose of waste responsibly
⚓ Use pump-out facilities and keep sewage out of our waterways
⚓ Respect marine wildlife and sensitive habitats
⚓ Leave nothing behind but a wake
⚓ Be a good skipper and set an example for your crew

Whether you're casting a line in the Tweed, cruising the Broadwater, dropping anchor at the Pin or heading offshore, every voyage is an opportunity to be a steward of the sea.
