Kristy Thomson - On Safari "Everything in Africa bites, but the safari bug is worst of all" ~ Brian Jackman

IG: In 2016 it became reality. I went on Safari to Kenya with Gamewatchers Safaris, staying in their own small Porini Camps in private conservancies, land leased for eco-tourism from

the local Maasai people. I saw first hand the benefits of the private conservancy model; how it is having a positive impact on the natural environment, the wildlife and the local Maasai community. I am now the Australian-based Safari Advisor for Gamewatchers Safaris. I want to help others now create their own ultimate wildlife safari. Check out my very first safari experience: https://mykenyasafari2016.wordpress.com/ and follow this page for the trips that followed...

Experience the real wilderness of Kenya. Tailoring authentic eco-friendly safaris for wildlife enthusiasts. Specialising in small group accompanied tours for conservation-minded citizens wanting to make a difference. There is a Kenya wildlife safari experience for almost any budget! ✨ Pregnant and unhappy we found her

We didn’t stay very long at all as she was clearly unimpressed with our presence. Heavily pregnant and on her way to reunite with the rest of her pride.

Lionesses have a gestation period of about 110 days. After they give birth they keep some distance from the pride, only introducing the cubs once they are a little bit bigger and stronger.

Credit (and mild resentment) to (IG handle) for both the images and the permission 😉

I finally convinced him to check out the Porini Camps, and this is what his game drives looked like.

I’m experiencing a very mature, very controlled case of safari FOMO.

Next time, I’m making it a non-negotiable rule that any safari I recommend comes with one condition — I come along too.

All jokes aside, these are just fabulous. A perfect combination of Alex’s eye as a skilled photographer, game-rich Mara conservancies, and excellent guiding.

Alex stayed at Ol Kinyei Porini Safari Cottages and Porini Lion Camp in January.

Nothing beats a Gamewatchers Safari — and I think we’ve found our newest fan.

✨ When you’ve finally got your… lions — I mean ducks — in a row 🦁🦆🦁🦆 …

And you’re planning that dream come true Kenya safari. Here are a few things worth “lioning” up first:

⏰ Timing matters.
July–September is peak season (migration, higher prices, crowds).
Jan–March and Nov–Dec = excellent wildlife, calving season, fewer people, better value.
June and October sit nicely in the middle with good weather and savings.

💰Budget, realistically.
Go fully inclusive and watch the extras — park and conservancy fees add up fast (Masai Mara USD $200 pp/day Jul-Dec for example). Budget shapes both trip length and location/accom style.

🏕️ Camps vs lodges.
I personally prioritise small tented camps — more intimate, lighter footprint, and stronger community support.

🍃 Conservancies vs parks.
I’m a big conservancy fan: capped vehicle numbers, off-roading, night drives, ethical guiding, and more habitat for wildlife. That said, Kenya still has uncrowded national park gems, and combining both can work beautifully.

✈️ Fly or drive?
I usually fly — more time on safari, less time on the road. If it’s over 4 hours, I fly. For solo travellers or couples, flying can be surprisingly comparable in cost. The occasional drive (like Meru to Ol Pejeta) is a nice way to mix it up.

Get these right, and everything else will fall perfectly into lion (I’m so sorry, last one - couldn’t help myself 🦁😉😜)

✨ Kulete and her cub, Sadala, feed on a gazelle while deliberately leaving the digestive system intact and pushed aside (the mass on the left). The stomach and intestines, if ruptured produce strong odours that can attract other predators.

Cheetahs are the weakest of the big cats and know when they are outsized and out challenged. Once on the scent hyenas will come to steal the kill, and lions and leopards present a serious risk, particularly to cubs.

As a result, cheetahs feed quite rapidly, remain constantly alert, and move on once they have eaten to minimise a risky encounter.

✨African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth — but size is only part of the story.

Highly intelligent and deeply social, they are also one of Africa’s most important ecosystem engineers.

• Trunks with tens of thousands of muscles: gentle enough to pluck a blade of grass, strong enough to move trees.

• Low rumbles travel kilometres, keeping families connected.

• They open paths, spread seeds, and help countless other species thrive.

• Family groups are led by matriarchs whose memory and experience guide the herd to food, water, and safety, sometimes over decades.

Amboseli National Park and the conservancies and wildlife corridors around it, is one of the best places to witness this firsthand — where large elephant herds move beneath Kilimanjaro, and their role in the landscape is impossible to miss.

🐆 Namunyak — “Lucky” in the Maa language.

But the luck was all mine. This glorious, inquisitive creature, just five months old and daughter of Ndoto (which means “Dream” in Swahili), was my very first leopard cub sighting.

Over these few days in Mara North Conservancy, luck truly was on my side — and a dream quietly came true.

🐾 Don’t underestimate her …

She is the organiser, the protector, and the backbone of pride life.

She is the lioness.

But she is also tender.

Within a pride, lionesses are deeply nurturing — grooming one another, playing with cubs, and raising their young side by side. Cubs are everyone’s responsibility, suckling from multiple mothers and growing up surrounded by constant contact, affection, and protection.

Fierce when she needs to be.
Gentle when it matters most.

✨ Kulete and her son Sadala (“playful” in the Maa language) spend time playing between hunts.

For cubs, play is a critical part of development — sharpening coordination, speed and decision-making — while also strengthening the bond with their mother.

For a threatened species, these early interactions matter. They shape whether a young cheetah will one day hunt successfully and survive independently.

✨ Jambo, I’m Kristy — the face behind the page👋🏽

I’m a wildlife biologist who realised after 25 years that policies, politics and offices weren’t where I belonged. I wanted to be back in the field, where conservation is lived, not just discussed.

A decade ago, I stepped out of an office and back into the wild — and nothing has been the same since.

One trip to Kenya shifted my path, my purpose, and my heart. Since then, its conservancies, wildlife and communities that have felt like home.

Today, I work with Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps, helping travellers plan ethical, authentic safaris — the kind that truly benefit wildlife and the people who live alongside it. Ethics matter to me because conservation only works when communities thrive and wildlife has space.

I also lead small group safaris (hosted by Gamewatchers) that go beyond the standard game drive — intimate, behind-the-scenes experiences that connect you to the land, the people, and the stories often unseen.

Alongside this, I’m the director of The Maarifa Foundation, supporting Maasai communities bordering the conservancies through school fees and conservation education. Supporting the community is supporting the wildlife.

I’m a hobbyist wildlife photographer — no expert — but incredibly lucky to witness and capture some extraordinary moments, and always love sharing my knowledge with my guests.

Most of all, I’ve made lifelong friends along the way — in Kenya, in Maasai communities, and right here on the socials with people who share a passion for wildlife, conservation and ethical travel.

You could say I’ve been bitten by the safari bug… but it runs deeper than that. Kenya feels like home, and this work feels like purpose.

🌍✨ Thanks for being here, it’s lovely to meet you all 🤍
