We stopped into a small town in northern Victoria on our way home from Tasmania a couple of days ago for a coffee and when we returned to the car this little beauty was waiting for us.

Sunday 28th June. 145 years ago today.

The Glenrowan Siege begins.

At around 2am on Sunday the 28th June, the special Police Train leaves Benalla and travels onwards past Glenrowan. The party inside the inn ends at around the same time and hostages are told to leave until Ned calls them back on the orders of Mrs Ann Jones to give a lecture. In between 2-3am, Curnow convinces Ned to be sent home and is successful. Upon leaving Curnow bravely holds a red scarf and lantern to warn the police special train to stop.

3.15-5am. The shootout begins. Constable Hugh Bracken escapes the inn and warns that there are hostages inside, his warning is ignored and rounds of volleys hit the inn. Ned, Joe and Francis Hare are amongst the first wounded. While hostages Johnny and Jane Jones and Martin Cherry are wounded by police fire while George Metcalf is wounded by Ned’s misfire of his gun. Shortly before 6am Ned leaves the inn to warn sympathisers to leave as his plans have gone astray.
