Don’t take our word for it, read it straight from the source: “Dear Fremantle Pilots,

I can’t even begin to tell you the impact this experience has had on me. I was passionate about this industry prior to my work experience with Fremantle Pilots, now I’m completely obsessed.

You and your team were so welcoming and friendly. Everyone taught me something, shared an experience or included me in an opportunity to learn. It was such an incredible feeling to be surrounded by likeminded people.

I really appreciate everything you have done for me and I am so grateful for the contacts below.

Thanks again for a truly memorable experience. I can’t believe how lucky I was to score such an awesome opportunity.

Warmest regards,

Kiarra ☺️” would like to acknowledge for contributing to Kiarra’s week with us! Thankyou everyone involved 🙏

Dave Jones caught the maritime bug early, first going to sea on a Christmas voyage aboard Iron Prince, sailing from Newcastle to Kwinana. That experience set the course for a lifelong career on the water. In 1984, Dave began as a cadet with ASP, later sailing with State Ships and Norwest Shipping, where he spent 17 years at sea. He also completed 2.5 years with Woodside on their supply vessels, steadily working his way up to Master.

Dave commenced his pilotage career in Wyndham in 2001, before moving to Esperance from 2004 to 2006 and then on to Fremantle, where he would leave an enduring legacy. Over a 20-year Fremantle pilotage career, Dave conducted more than 6,200 ship movements, contributing to a remarkable total of 6,950 moves across his career.

The Jones name is well known along the WA coast. Dave’s father was a respected pilot in several Western Australian ports and a highly regarded compass adjuster who served the wider boating community. In fact, Dave’s very first experience of pilotage came at just 10 years old, accompanying his father while piloting a vessel into Useless Loop, Shark Bay.

Highly regarded by colleagues and the maritime community alike, Dave now steps into retirement, turning his focus to completing the construction of his dream home. A passionate historian—particularly of Fremantle—Dave is currently writing a book to be released for Fremantle’s bicentenary in 2029. You may also find him wandering the streets of Fremantle, sharing his knowledge through private guided historical tours.

Fair winds, Dave—and thank you for an extraordinary contribution.

Like Father, Like Son

Spending his teenage years in Fremantle, after originating in Darwin. Tom Moran has proudly followed in the footsteps of his father, Simon Moran — a former Fremantle Pilot, who retired in 2015.

Tom began his maritime career in 2009 as a Cadet and went on to achieve his Master Mariner Class 1 in 2020. That same year, he became a Wyndham Load Master Pilot, and in 2021 he stepped into the role of Marine Pilot in Broome, guiding vessels through the region’s powerful tides.

Most recently serving as an Unrestricted Marine Pilot at the Port of Broome, Tom brings a strong passion for pilotage. He thrives on the dynamic nature of the role, particularly the forward planning, precision, and adaptability required to navigate the ever-changing tidal conditions and limited berth space in the port.

With more than a decade at sea, Tom has gained extensive experience across the maritime industry. His background includes rig moves, offshore supply operations, barge towing, tandem towing, shallow and deep-water anchor handling, and service aboard an accommodation vessel.

We are excited to welcome Tom to the team and look forward to the expertise and enthusiasm he brings to the role.

Capt. Ekin and trainee Capt. Moran recently guided the tanker Pacific Montana—on her maiden voyage and carrying a caustic cargo—into the ALCOA 2 berth on 1 December. On behalf of Fremantle Ports they presented a commemorative plaque to the vessel’s Master to mark the occasion, who was also celebrating his birthday. A double celebration all round! 🎉🚢

Another aspiring future maritime professional—James Eliot from Ocean Reef Senior High School, couldn’t wipe the smile off his face during his week of work experience with us. His program included tours of Fremantle Ports and the VTS Tower (boasting one of the best views on the coast), visits to the Echo Yachts facility and Svitzer, and the opportunity to join the Australian Border Force aboard their state-of-the-art vessel during sea trials in Cockburn Sound.

It was a pleasure having you on board, James. We look forward to seeing you again in the maritime industry.

Huge congratulations to Freo Pilot Matt Even and his crew Matt Thur for taking out the premier Powercraft category (10hp Sports) in this year’s Avon Descent. This is Matt’s eleventh Avon but his first win after multiple podium finishes (seconds and thirds).

The Powercraft category is not for the faint hearted with Matt’s ‘Team 100’ averaging 57.5 km/h over the 124 km course from Northam to Bayswater. Their maximum speed was 74 km/h, not bad for a 9.9hp engine, and significantly faster than Matt is used to doing whilst piloting ships in Fremantle!

Matt started racing in 2009 after being introduced to this exciting and unique sport by his boss at Captain Cook Cruises, where he worked as a youngster.

Congratulations again to the two Matt’s and their support crew on this fantastic achievement. We look forward to sponsoring you again as you aim for ‘back to back’ in 2026!
