December 1938, On Friday (late night shopping night), a street carnival andd gala night arranged by a strond committee of local business men and citizens proved a wonderful attraction, the crowd in the street, the largest on record. All the frontages of business places were brilliantly illuminated by electric lights, and decorated with flags, bunting an chestnut boughs, while flags were also suspe
nded across the street. In the centre of the business section, a large truck on which was placed a piano, was utilised as a dais, from which community singing was conducted by Mr j Walker with Miss R Noble as accompanist. A Christmas tree was erected in the street and the appearance of Santa Claus was heralded by the ringing of bells, and loud cheering from the large assemblage of children. Novelty events were held, the most popular being a wheelbarrow race down the main street, another a slow bicycle race…
………….and so our tradition of street carnivals continue, with crowds of people flocking to our community night, but no longer to we have the room for wheelbarrow races, but the spirit of Christmas is with us again.
3 Ham wheels now operate, with the chance of winning Hams & Turkeys. Santa will arrive at approximately 8pm, (depending on the reindeer) with gifts for all the children.
