Ellen Edwin-Scott and me Joseph Schneider delivered more posters today for the project
To Jeanette and Colin and the gang at The Midway Truck Stop and John at the scrapyard off the A495
They were all sooooooo chuffed and it's do heartening for us that the project will live on in posters in windows and living rooms and sheds across the area :)))
we'll be sharing the poster with participants over the coming weeks and months as a BIG thank-you πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
With photographs by young people from Wem youth club on one side, as well as a poem about the A495 and a gorgeous text by Ellen on the other side we hope that they'll be as happy with it as we are :))))

Generously supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery through an award by the Postcode Local Trust

This is fun!

Today and tomorrow as part of Heritage Open Days, come and find out about the Road Stories project. Listen to real-life stories of road travel in North Shropshire, and even record your own story at our mobile recording booth.

Visit our interactive display to find out more about our project and the communities that we worked alongside.

You can also get creative with the whole family as well by designing a fantasy vehicle or contributing to our β€œfridge magnet” road poem.

We will be located in an agricultural building which once belonged to the Old Rectory. It will be possible to view an exhibition chronicling the restoration of the Old Rectory Ice House and the history of similar buildings.

This summer we took Road Stories to Wem Vehicles of Interest, and while we were there I met some people from Wem Area Climate Action. One member of the group had brought along an electric car to show to people during the day and to start a conversation. I was curious to find WACA there amongst the classic cars, the big trucks and the tractors and I recorded this short interview to find out more about it all.

Listening back to it on this recording, you can hear the sound of the all the vehicles revving up for the big parade as they pass through the park.

Today I spent a fascinating couple of hours walking in Welshampton with Heather Rodenhurst.

Heather generously shared what she knew about the routes around her home, historical and personal reflections on the ways that people have travelled around the village through time.

The hollow way in the picture is still used as a footpath although you couldn't describe it as a 'road' these days. The entrance is grassy and the steep banks are eroded so that the roots of the trees show through. But the track has been worn down by long years of use by local people, travelling to school, to home and to work over perhaps hundreds of years.

I'll be sharing some of today's conversations as part of our next podcast. Look out for stories about ancient Welsh heroes, disappearing standing stones, field names and forgotten paths...

Do you know a forgotten path? A green road? A hollow way? Tell us about it in the comments or post a picture!

I'm busy working on the 2nd podcast, with the theme 'Lost and Found'.

Have you ever found anything interesting on the road? If so, we'd like to hear about it. Send us a direct message if you'd like to tell us about something interesting you've found on or near to a public highway.

A journey through stories collected on the Road Stories project! Rural Art Hub have been collecting stories about the road in rural North Shropshire since August 2023. This podcast reflects on the stories, and on the idea of home.
