Definitely makes life pretty handy having fuel right here at the marina. Another little win with the move and getting settled into our new home.

The fleet is fuelled up and ready for another big weekend on Lake Eildon! 🙌

Black Spur Hotel

The history of Narbethong's earliest notable building centers on the Black Spur Inn, originally built as the 12-room Narbethong Hotel (or Black Spur Hotel) in 1863 by Frederick Fisher.

Origins and Gold Rush Era1863
Frederick Fisher established the licensed hotel along the newly forming track connecting Melbourne to the Wood Point and Gippsland goldfields.

Coaching Stop
The shanty and hotel served as a vital changing station for horse-drawn coaches carrying prospectors.

Naming
Fisher originally came from Narberth in Wales, which likely inspired the name "Narbethong" (an Aboriginal word later associated to mean "cheerful place").

While the Goulburn River has a rich, well-chronicled history of fishing for premier trout and other species, using a repurposed corrugated iron tank as a makeshift boat, hide, or platform in the first half of the 1900s is not part of its standard local lore.

It sounds like a niche local anecdote, a humorous piece of private family history, or a creative tall tale rather than a recognized historical event. Either way, here it is. Cost effective boating and fishing at its best.
