Proud to be the first port of call for the BYD Zhengzhou’s maiden voyage to Australia.

Carrying 4,809 electric vehicles, the Zhengzhou arrived at the Port of Melbourne on Sunday, 31 May—marking a milestone in the growth of Australia’s EV supply chain.

To commemorate the occasion, Port of Melbourne’s Head of Maritime Operations, Warwick Laing, presented a plaque to Captain Zhao Taotao and crew, recognising their role in this landmark journey.

At Port of Melbourne, we continue to see strong momentum in motor vehicle imports from China, with volumes increasing by more than 80% year-on-year. China now represents approximately 27% of all vehicle imports through the Port, up from around 15% just a year ago—positioning it as the second-largest source market behind Japan at 30%.

As Australia’s largest automotive port, we remain committed to supporting the evolving needs of the automotive industry and enabling the transition to electric mobility.

1.8 million meals across our local community in 2025 💜

That’s the impact Port of Melbourne helped deliver with our community partner, Foodbank Victoria — and we’re proud to keep building on it.

Most recently, our team volunteered at the Farms to Families Market in Ascot Vale, where 4,299 kilos of fresh food and pantry staples were distributed to 290 families!

Proud to continue working alongside Foodbank Victoria, supporting those who need it most.

This week, Port of Melbourne was proud to support the South East Careers and Try a Trade Expo 2026, engaging with more than 4,000 secondary school students exploring future career pathways.

Our Education Advisor, Christina Gallichio, connected with students and educators to showcase the diverse opportunities across the maritime and logistics sector — helping build awareness of the critical role ports play in supporting Victoria’s economy.

We were also pleased to be joined by Marco Quaranta from Victoria International Container Terminal, reflecting the strength of collaboration across the port community in inspiring the next generation of talent.

Port of Melbourne has successfully completed the first full 10-year cycle of the Whole of Bay Survey Schedule (WOBSS) — marking the first time that comprehensive, high-resolution bathymetry (detailed seafloor mapping showing depths) has ever been delivered for Port Phillip Bay.

Over a span of 10 years, our team surveyed 215,000 hectares of water in the bay. Why it mattered: large areas hadn’t been surveyed since the 1940s–60s. With advancements in technology, we were able to cover approx. 130 km of fairways and channels, supporting safe navigation.

What we discovered:
🌊Ancient river channels
🧭Previously uncharted heritage shipwrecks
🌏Beyond these discoveries, the program also enables ongoing environmental monitoring

Most importantly, the WOBSS represents ongoing collaboration and commitment. Over its lifecycle, many surveyors, vessel masters, GIS specialists, and managers have contributed to its success. Completing the first full cycle is a proud achievement for all involved and a strong foundation for the future of evidence‑based port management and maritime safety.

Webb Dock Trail is back open!

Good news for our local trail users: the Webb Dock Trail has reopened following the completion of essential repairs after recent storm damage.

The short‑term works were completed as planned between 27–29 April 2026, and 24‑hour public access has now been restored.

Thank you for your patience while we worked to make the path safe and enjoyable again. We hope you enjoy getting back out on the trail!

Connecting study with real‑world industry 🤝

Last week, we hosted RMIT University Diploma of Business students at our Port Education Centre, where Tim Dornom, Senior Manager Sustainability, Chloe Tame, Manager Environmental Services, and Amanda Maloney, Manager - Safety Operations shared how sustainability, environmental stewardship and risk management are embedded into everyday decision‑making.

Great to see such strong curiosity about the future of trade and logistics.

Working together to support Victoria’s fuel security.

Striking footage of the Largo Eagle arriving at the Port of Melbourne last week to deliver approximately 50 million litres of ultra‑low sulphur diesel at ExxonMobil Australia’s facility – helping keep essential goods and services moving across Victoria.

In times of global supply‑chain pressure, strong partnerships are essential. That’s why Port of Melbourne remains firmly committed to working closely with industry and government to support operational continuity and ensure the port continues to operate as a reliable trade gateway.

Yesterday, approximately 50 million litres of diesel for Victoria were safely delivered at ExxonMobil Australia's facility at Port of Melbourne. This single delivery represents enough diesel to fill the fuel tanks of every Hilux sold in Australia over the past decade.

Port of Melbourne’s tenant, ExxonMobil Australia, is one of the country’s major fuel suppliers, providing almost half of Victoria’s fuel requirements.

In our position as Australia's largest container and general cargo port, we remain committed to working closely with our tenants, industry partners and government to support fuel security for Victoria during this period of heightened pressure across global supply chains.

This Earth Day, we reflect on the steady progress we’re making to reduce our environmental impact and transition the Port toward a low‑carbon future. With a Net Zero target for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, we’ve already achieved a 62 per cent reduction from our baseline — an important milestone on our sustainability journey.

Below are some recent highlights. Explore more in our latest Sustainability Report:https://www.portofmelbourne.com/wp-content/uploads/2025-PoM-Sustainability-Report-FINAL.pdf
