Anti-social behaviour has been on the rise on public transport across Australia. Our Human.Kind campaign aims promote kindness and respect towards drivers who are too often on the receiving end of abuse and threats.
It is part of our commitment to fostering safer, more respectful communities, elevating the role of bus drivers and addressing key challenges in the industry.
Russell is a bus driver from with CDC Northern Territory and one of the faces of the campaign that is featured on posters inside most of our buses and on the outside of twenty one buses across New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria.
Our drivers are an integral part of their community and make a difference in the lives of their passengers. "I always make sure that as soon as I open the door, instantly I say 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' - that's really important," he says. "It makes passengers feel comfortable straight away. Even if I don't get a hello back, passengers notice it."
Why is this campaign important to Russell? "Firstly, I think it will encourage people to join as drivers after seeing the friendly faces and how much customer service is involved in bus driving and caring for your passengers,” he says.
“People will see CDC doing our part by giving our passengers really good customer service. I think it also shows how important it is to interact with people – interacting with people is such a big part of the job. You want people to enjoy their journey. It’s not just about getting people from A to B, it’s about making them feel comfortable."
It is Russell's commitment to his passengers that resulted in him receiving a letter of commendation from the Northern Territory government for his efforts in helping the community.
Behind the wheel of every bus is a driver like Russell, who brings their heart to their role and a commitment to the people they transport.
