A lot of sites rely on lane marking, cones or a bit of chain to keep vehicles out of the work area and away from walkways. It marks the edge, but none of it physically stops a vehicle. Paint wears away, cones get moved and it only takes one driver in the wrong spot.

Warehouse safety isn't one person's job. It's a shared responsibility between everyone on the floor - drivers, staff, and the team auditing it.

Auditing isn't just logging damage. It's looking beyond the obvious and catching what's easy to walk past. Our reporting process exists so forklift drivers understand what falls under their responsibility day to day, and what falls under ours to catch and correct.
Three examples from a recent audit:

Photo 1 - A beam location 8 metres up. At that height, even a small failure isn't a small problem, it's a falling load with real force behind it by the time it reaches the floor.

Photo 2 - A dislodged safety clip. It looks minor. It isn't - a clip holds the beam locked to the upright, and without it, a loaded beam has nothing stopping it from lifting out under impact.

Photo 3 - No rear safety clips at all, on a beam still holding load 5 metres up. This is the kind of gap that doesn't show up unless someone is actually looking for it, not just checking for visible damage.

All three were reported and addressed immediately.

Palletised stock moving in and out daily needs one thing above everything else: a forklift driver can get to any pallet without moving another one first.

That's what selective racking is built for. Every pallet position sits on its own beam level with a clear aisle in front of it, so any SKU is reachable directly, regardless of what's stored around it. For operations running high SKU counts or frequent order turnaround - wholesale distribution, 3PL, manufacturing feeding a production line - that direct access matters more than squeezing extra pallet positions into the same footprint.

It's also why selective is usually the starting point for a new fit-out. Beam heights adjust to pallet size, aisle widths adjust to forklift type, and the layout scales as stock volume changes, without needing to redesign the whole system.

From two warehouses to one, with room to grow.

We recently helped our client consolidate their operations into a single warehouse, installing second hand double-sided racking to maximise every square metre of floor space.

The result: around a 50% increase in pallet storage capacity, configured for standard CHEP pallets, plus particleboard decked shelving for hand picking smaller orders.

An 87.5% increase in pallet storage, in the same footprint. That's the difference the right racking system can make.

Last year our team designed and installed a new Schaefer drive-in racking system for a food production and supply business in Melbourne. Going into the project, the client believed their warehouse could hold around 48 pallet spaces of bulk storage.

By reworking the layout with drive-in racking instead of a more conventional system, we got them to 90 pallet spaces, using less floor space than the original 48-pallet plan called for.

Drive-in racking works well for businesses storing large volumes of the same product line, since forklifts drive directly into the racking to load and retrieve pallets, removing the need for individual aisles. For food production and supply operations moving high volumes of consistent stock, that density difference can free up serious floor space for other parts of the operation.
Twelve months on, the client's had zero issues with the system and is still very happy with how it's performing.
