Palletised stock moving in and out daily needs one thing above everything else: a forklift driver can get to any pallet without moving another one first.

That's what selective racking is built for. Every pallet position sits on its own beam level with a clear aisle in front of it, so any SKU is reachable directly, regardless of what's stored around it. For operations running high SKU counts or frequent order turnaround - wholesale distribution, 3PL, manufacturing feeding a production line - that direct access matters more than squeezing extra pallet positions into the same footprint.

It's also why selective is usually the starting point for a new fit-out. Beam heights adjust to pallet size, aisle widths adjust to forklift type, and the layout scales as stock volume changes, without needing to redesign the whole system.

Closing down a warehouse, relocating, or upgrading to new equipment? We offer a buy-back service for quality second hand racking systems, helping you recover value from equipment you no longer need.

We can also manage the full process for you, including removal, preparing the floor with core drilling and epoxy filling once the racking is out.

It's a straightforward way to offset the cost of your move, while helping other businesses access quality racking at a lower cost and lower carbon footprint than buying new.

From two warehouses to one, with room to grow.

We recently helped our client consolidate their operations into a single warehouse, installing second hand double-sided racking to maximise every square metre of floor space.

The result: around a 50% increase in pallet storage capacity, configured for standard CHEP pallets, plus particleboard decked shelving for hand picking smaller orders.

Using quality used materials kept costs down and reduced the project's carbon footprint, without compromising on safety. Every installation complies with AS4084:2023, and certification is provided for all used racking systems.

An 87.5% increase in pallet storage, in the same footprint. That's the difference the right racking system can make.

Last year our team designed and installed a new Schaefer drive-in racking system for a food production and supply business in Melbourne. Going into the project, the client believed their warehouse could hold around 48 pallet spaces of bulk storage.

By reworking the layout with drive-in racking instead of a more conventional system, we got them to 90 pallet spaces, using less floor space than the original 48-pallet plan called for.

Drive-in racking works well for businesses storing large volumes of the same product line, since forklifts drive directly into the racking to load and retrieve pallets, removing the need for individual aisles. For food production and supply operations moving high volumes of consistent stock, that density difference can free up serious floor space for other parts of the operation.
Twelve months on, the client's had zero issues with the system and is still very happy with how it's performing.

If floor space is the constraint in your warehouse, it's worth finding out whether drive-in racking could get you more storage out of the same footprint. Get in touch with our team to talk through your options.

When your inventory defies standard sizing, forcing it into conventional bays creates hidden costs:

- Restricted Access: Upright frames block your path, making loading and unloading slow and hazardous.
- Dead Space: Standard shelf depths leave massive gaps at the front and back.
- Handling Friction: Operators waste time manoeuvring oversized stock past vertical columns.

Cantilever systems remove front vertical columns entirely. Because the arms extend outward from a single central spine, your warehouse gains an open-face layout built specifically around the shape of your product:

- Unrestricted Handling: Slide long lengths straight onto the arms with a forklift from end to end.
- Maximised Vertical Space: Utilise adjustable tiers to scale storage density upward instead of across your floor.
- Safer Operations: Keep heavy materials securely cradled to reduce manual handling risks.

Growing fast? Your racking needs to keep up.

One of our e-commerce 3PL clients has grown from one warehouse to three in six months. Pallet capacity is up 550% in that time with a further expansion is already in the works.

Every stage of that growth meant a new racking conversation: how much bulk storage vs pick-face access, how fast it could be installed and whether the racking brand could be resupplied quickly enough to avoid delays as the next site came online.
We used SSI Schaefer racking across all three installations for reliability and consistent stock availability, so growth wasn't held up waiting on materials.

If your business is scaling at a similar pace, this is the kind of partnership to look for in a racking supplier: someone who can turn around a design quickly and build with your next stage of growth already in mind.

Proud to have supported this client so far.

Your warehouse floor never really stands still. Between the rush of dispatch deadlines and the constant movement of heavy machinery, your racking system is under a high-pressure endurance test every single day.

It often starts with a small clip from a forklift or a pallet being nudged a fraction too hard. To an operator in a hurry, it looks like a minor scuff that isn't worth stopping for. However, in a high-density system, that small impact is a genuine structural compromise.

These impacts accumulate over time. What seems like a tiny dent today weakens the ability of the steel to hold tonnes of inventory tomorrow. Safety is rarely about one big accident. It is about the small hits you didn't think mattered.

Let us inspect your racks before a small dent becomes a major problem. Book a professional repair assessment: https://www.absolutestorage.com.au/repairs-and-maintenance/

A warehouse that feels too small is often just a warehouse that isn't flowing correctly.

When a layout is designed without considering peak flow or forklift turning circles, your team spends more time navigating floor congestion than moving inventory. The outcome for you isn't just a new storage system, but a reduction in labour costs and a faster dispatch cycle.

The real goal is to create a facility where your team can work without constant interruptions or space constraints. Strategic planning ensures that your workspace supports your growth rather than creating an operational limit for it.

Is your current layout causing unnecessary delays? Let’s look at how a design update can open up your floor space. https://www.absolutestorage.com.au/warehouse-layout-and-design/

Mixing racking brands is now banned under AS4084:2023.

Under the latest Australian standard, mixing racking and brand-compatible components in the same row is no longer permitted for new installations or any repaired/modified racking.

Why does it matter?

Brand-compatible products (predominantly made in Asia) are designed to connect with the original, but they're not manufactured to the same quality. The steel is typically a lighter grade with different load capabilities and every manufacturer produces their own load tables based on their specific components.
When you mix brands, those load ratings become impossible to rely on. In many cases, compatible components carry no markings at all, making it very difficult to even identify the brand, let alone source the relevant load tables. Without a costly re-engineering process that assesses every single component, no company can accurately advise what that rack can safely carry.
Here's what we keep seeing: clients who, with the best of intentions, believe they have purchased genuine racking but received a mix of brands that just look the same. Not only have they likely been overcharged for what is largely a copy product, but under the new standard, they now face the added cost of bringing the installation up to compliance.

Used racking is a great value proposition, just make sure you know what you are buying and more importantly, what you are getting. Genuine branded racking has the brand marked on the components, compatible copies don't.

All used racking that Absolute Storage buys and sells can be rated and is genuine, whether that is Schaefer, Dexion, Colby or Stow. If you are not sure of what you are getting, ask the seller to put in writing that it complies with AS4084:2023, that the rows of racking are all the same brand, and that it is accurately rated.
Legitimate companies won't hesitate when asked. Less reputable ones will.

Compliance is a continuous cycle rather than a one-off task.

Under the AS 4084:2023 update, the responsibility for maintaining structural integrity sits directly with the business owner. When an audit identifies a red risk or even a yellow deflection, the clock starts ticking on your legal liability. It is critical that identified issues are fixed within a timely manner. Just completing an audit on its own does not meet the overriding requirements of the Standard if damages or issues have been identified.

Absolute Storage provides the full service to keep you safe:
- Independent 12-monthly audits to identify damaged components and assess those damages in line with the Worksafe guidelines.
- Professional repairs that restore your system to engineering standards.
- Load sign certification to ensure your signage matches your current beam levels.
