In global logistics, the Bill of Lading (B/L) isn’t just a formality—it’s the legal, commercial, and operational backbone of a shipment. One small error can lead to customs delays, cargo holds, or payment disputes.
Here’s how the Bill of Lading process works in practice:
1️⃣ Booking the Shipment
The shipper books space with the carrier, confirming cargo type, quantity, routing, dates, and freight charges.
2️⃣ Cargo Handover
Goods are delivered to the carrier or terminal. The carrier officially receives the cargo for transportation.
3️⃣ Draft Bill of Lading
The shipper or freight forwarder submits shipping instructions, including:
• Shipper & consignee details
• Cargo description
• Weight, volume & ports of loading/discharge
4️⃣ Verification & Approval
The draft B/L is carefully reviewed to ensure:
• Correct party names
• Accurate cargo details
• Agreed commercial and transport terms
5️⃣ Issuance of Bill of Lading
Once approved, the carrier issues the Original Bill of Lading (typically 3 originals), signed and stamped.
6️⃣ Distribution of B/L
Originals are sent to the consignee, while copies may go to banks, forwarders, and customs authorities.
7️⃣ Use at Destination
The consignee presents the original B/L to claim cargo, complete customs clearance, and arrange final delivery.
8️⃣ Completion of Shipment
Cargo is delivered, ownership is transferred, and the B/L process is completed.
