40 years ago, 27/3/1986, I bought my first new truck.
It replaced my day cab White Road Commander which I had purchased nearly 2 years earlier.
After six months I decided I didn’t really like the original paint colours so I had it towed into Royans in Dubbo for some panel beating and a new paint scheme.
Through the years I added to the fleet another 3 new trucks, in 1990 a Transtar, 1997 a Kenworth 401. A break for a few years to the Western Star and earlier this year buying a new DAF.
When I look back at all the photos I’m reminded of all the many and varied loads we carted. In the beginning mainly Grain and fertiliser, bulk into Sydney and around, then loading bagged fertiliser back from Newcastle, pulling a Crate for White's Stock Transport to delivering Air freight into Sydney Airport under the nose of a Russian Antonof.
Having the general freight business in Cowra servicing the many businesses was a privilege throughout the 1990’s.
The wheel has turned full circle and I’m back carting Livestock.
Way back in 1980/81 I did my first commercial load, I picked up a load of pigs and delivered them to Forbes Saleyards for a young agent Kevin Miller. 45 years later a major amount of my work is for Kevin Miller Whitty Lennon & Co.
There have been some pretty steep hills and deep gullies along the road but I’m always reminded of what it would have been like for my Grandfather a 100 years ago doing his weekly trip from Forbes to Sydney.
In 1927 he purchased his first new Truck, an Albion and we believe it was the first bogie drive truck to come over the mountain, yes that’s right down Victoria Pass. Sadly not much has changed since then on that stretch of road.
