With the uncertainty in today’s global affairs, it’s natural to feel concerned if you’re about to embark on an overseas trip. Concerns may range from rising travel costs and safety issues to delays to and from your destination.

One thing you can take control of is your health while travelling.

What does taking control of your health look like?

✔️ Have your health checks before you travel
Book in any overdue appointments such as dental check-ups, blood tests, or blood pressure checks. Make sure you have reviewed any existing medical conditions and that your doctor gives you the all-clear before you go.

✔️ Carry more than “just enough” medication
Ideally, bring at least an extra week’s supply of your medications and keep them in your carry-on. We also recommend carrying a few days’ worth in your handbag in case of delays.

✔️ Keep your medications clearly labelled
Carry a list from your doctor outlining your medications and medical conditions. If you require hospitalisation or medical care overseas, this information will be invaluable.

✔️ Don’t forget over-the-counter essentials
The last thing you want when travelling is to search for a pharmacy while unwell especially in a country where English may not be spoken. Having your own supply for common issues like headaches or diarrhoea saves time and stress. Our travel health packs (e.g. Gastro Packs) are designed so you have exactly what you need.

✔️ Don’t skip travel insurance
Especially in today’s climate. Enough said.

✈️🚗 Travel Tips for Parents: Help Your Kids Avoid Motion Sickness 🤢

Travelling with kids is exciting but for many families, motion sickness can turn a holiday highlight into a headache. Motion sickness happens when the brain gets mixed signals from the inner ear, eyes and body during movement and it’s most common in children aged about 2–12 years.

Here’s how you can reduce the chance of travel sickness and make the journey more comfortable:

✨ Simple non-medicine strategies that work:
✔️ Encourage your child to look at the horizon or out the window rather than screens or books as this helps the brain make sense of motion.
✔️ Avoid unnecessary head movements by using neck pillows or a headrest.
✔️ On planes, sitting over the wings often feels more stable.
✔️ Offer a light snack before travel and avoid heavy, greasy meals just beforehand.
✔️ Keep the air fresh with ventilation or air-conditioning as stuffy air can make nausea worse.

💊 Medicines for motion sickness
If these tips aren’t enough and your child regularly feels sick, talk to your pharmacist or GP. Some medicines can help prevent symptoms if taken about 30 minutes before travel and timing matters.

Some medications like hyoscine and certain antihistamines are used for motion sickness in older children (but they aren’t recommended for children under 2 years and some for under 6 years old) and SHOULD always be used under health professional guidance. It is important to speak to your pharmacist or doctor to check if the medication is safe and appropriate for your child.

Can you get traveller’s diarrhoea or Bali Bellj at a 5 star resort? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s not about the star rating, it’s about how food + water are handled behind the scenes.

Here are common reasons it can happen:

✅ You don’t know the hygiene practices of the person preparing your food. Even one lapse in hand hygiene can contaminate food or surfaces.

✅ Food can sit too long at unsafe temperatures (hello, buffet life). Warm food left out is a perfect environment for germs to multiply.

✅ Cross-contamination can happen in any kitchen. Raw foods (especially meat/seafood) can contaminate ready-to-eat foods via boards, utensils, benches or hands.

✅ Ice, water, salads, or “fresh” garnishes may be the weak link. Ice can be made from unsafe water, and raw produce may be washed with local water.

✅ Hotel standards may not match your expectations. A hotel can look spotless out front, but food safety is about consistent “back-of-house” practices: cleaning, cooking, storage, and safe water/raw ingredients.

✅ Where the produce comes from matters. Even good kitchens can’t fully control contamination that starts earlier in the supply chain (water sources, handling during transport, etc.).

✨ The solution? Maintain safe food and drink standards at all times, especially at destinations/countries where traveller’s diarrhoea is known.

✈️ Travelling With ADHD Medications Overseas

(What to know before you fly!)

Taking ADHD medication overseas, especially stimulants like Vyvanse, dexamphetamine or methylphenidate can be challenging . Every country has different rules and some treat these medicines as controlled or prohibited substances.

✅ 1. Know exactly what you’re taking

Have a clear list of your medications, strengths and total quantities. Some countries limit the amount of controlled medicine you can carry.

✅ 2. Research your destination’s rules

Check the embassy or consulate website for each country you’re visiting and transiting through. Requirements vary widely from simple documentation to import permits or bans.

✅ 3. Contact the embassy.

Email gives you a written record in case you ever need to show customs that you followed all instructions.

✅ 4. Recheck requirements before travelling

Regulations can change, so confirm the rules again close to your departure date.

✅ 5. Carry the right documents

Keep several copies (printed and digital) of:
• Your doctor’s letter (diagnosis, medication details, dosing)
• Your prescription
• Any embassy permits or correspondence
• Your itinerary

Make sure everything is current and consistent.

✅ 6. Keep medication in original packaging

Your pharmacy label must clearly show your:
• name
• medication name + strength
• dosage instructions
• prescribing doctor

This helps customs verify authenticity.

✅ 7. Keep medication with you at all times

Carry ADHD medicines in your carry-on bag.
Don’t place them in checked luggage or give them to someone else to hold.

✅ 8. If unsure, reconsider the destination

Some countries have extremely strict controlled substance laws. When in doubt, it’s safer to avoid travelling there.

🔎 Extra Tips (from Australian Government Office of Drug Control & DFAT)

• Bring no more than a 30-day supply unless your destination specifically allows more.
• Your doctor’s letter should match the quantity you’re carrying.
• Some countries require a personal import licence, apply several weeks in advance.
• Remember: transit countries also have rules, even if you don’t leave the airport.

⚠️ Disclaimer

This is general advice only. Always confirm requirements with:
• your doctor
• your pharmacist
• your travel agent
• the embassy of each destination and transit country

✈️ Did you know that flying long distances while taking the contraceptive pill can increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?

When you’re sitting still for hours in the air, your blood flow slows down. If you’re also taking the Pill, your risk of developing a blood clot is even higher. That’s why taking the contraceptive pill means you need to take cute precautions (and yes, compression socks can be stylish too!)

Here are some easy ways to protect yourself on your next flight:

✅ Wear compression socks – they help improve circulation and reduce swelling
✅ Stay well hydrated – water is best and go easy on the alcohol
✅ Keep moving – stretch, walk the aisle when you can and avoid crossing your legs

💡 If you’re planning a holiday and you’re on any regular medications, especially the contraceptive pill, we can help you prepare with advice tailored to you.

🐶 Which dog has rabies?

…………………………………

Animals don’t need to look sick to carry rabies. This deadly disease is found in over 150 countries and can be spread through a scratch, bite or lick on broken skin from infected animals even puppies or monkeys that appear friendly.

💉 When is the rabies vaccine recommended for travellers?

According to the Australian Immunisation Handbook and NSW Health, rabies vaccination is strongly recommended if you are:

✔️ Travelling to areas where rabies is common (Asia, Africa, Central or South America)
✔️ Staying for over a month or going to rural or remote areas
✔️ Likely to have contact with animals, especially children, cyclists, hikers or animal volunteers
✔️ Working in high-risk occupations (like animal handlers or wildlife workers)

Even with the vaccine, urgent medical care is still needed after exposure but being vaccinated gives you vital protection and simplifies treatment.

Our travel health pharmacist can assess your risk and administer the rabies vaccine at the pharmacy.

3. Chikungunya
• Health Complications: Joint pain from chikungunya can become chronic, lasting for months or even years after infection.

4. Yellow Fever
• Health Complications: Severe cases can cause liver and kidney failure, leading to jaundice and, in some instances, death.

5. Japanese Encephalitis
• Health Complications: In rare cases, it can lead to brain inflammation (encephalitis), permanent neurological damage, or even death.
