📣 Media Release - Hinchinbrook Island National Park – Planned Burn June 2023

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn on Hinchinbrook Island on Tuesday 20 June to Friday 23 June 2023, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

As a result, smoke may be seen within the Region.

Smoke can decrease visibility on the road and on the water, so it is important that motorists and vessel masters drive safely to the conditions.

Just when you think you've been to them all there's another island to explore! 🏝

Garden Island, 164km north of Townsville, is a small tropical island, sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park 🪸 and two larger islands. It's a pristine oasis covered in dense tropical forests 🌿🦋, boulders and wide sandy beaches. 🏖 And for an extra treat, Dugongs and Turtles 🐢 can be seen surfacing as they feed on the extensive seagrass beds in the shallow waters.

The island is home to a campsite 🏕🌙 and nature trails/boardwalks, so you're probably going to want to add this beauty to your list for your next camping trip! 👌🏽

Smoke from planned burn -


The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct planned burn operations within Hinchinbrook Island National Park, between Banksia Bay and Mulligan Falls from 15th to 20th May 2023, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

As a result, smoke will be seen coming from the east coast of Hinchinbrook Island.

The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.

This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.
