Three months ago we asked a simple question:

Can sharing stories help people feel more connected to their city and each other?

Over the past three months passengers have been discussing books and discovering local authors.

There will be no light rail services from the first service on Saturday 31 October to the last service on Sunday 1 November 2026. This is due to critical construction works for Light Rail Stage 2A.

Rail replacement buses, operated by CDC Canberra will be operating in both directions along the entire light rail corridor between Alinga Street and Gungahlin Place during this time.

There will be no impacts to regular Transport Canberra bus services in the city, with no planned changes to the City Interchange or to the platform layout for the duration of the works.

Customers are encouraged to listen to PA announcements, follow wayfinding signage, and allow extra time to travel during this period.

Recently CMET and Transport Canberra connected with attendees of COTA’s ACT Seniors and Better Ageing Expo, sharing information about Canberra’s growing light rail network.

It was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with attendees, answer questions and discuss the important role public transport plays in supporting independence, accessibility and connectivity across the city.

Whether those who stopped by provided constructive feedback, asked questions or had a friendly chat, we appreciated every conversation. These interactions help us understand the needs and experiences of our passengers and contribute to the ongoing improvement of our services.

To everyone who shared their thoughts with us at the Expo, thank you. Building strong connections with the community remains an important part of delivering a safe, reliable and community-centric light rail service.

If you spot one onboard, it’s yours to pick up, read and enjoy. When you’re finished, pass it on to another commuter so the story can keep travelling.
These books will close out our three-month shared reading journey. From sport fields and family histories to questions of belonging, memory, community and connection.
Light Rail Local Reads has always been about a simple idea: what if the books we read on our commute could help us feel more connected to the city, to local writers and to each other?

Our Part-Time Light Rail Vehicle Driver roles suit individuals who can maintain concentration, follow procedures and respond calmly to changing situations. In return, you'll join a collaborative team that plays a critical role in Canberra's public transport network.
