Meet the Guides: Tim

I’m 66 years old and have lived in Tasmania for nearly forty years, where I’ve raised two wonderful daughters and now enjoy time with my two grandchildren.

Much of my life has been spent exploring the wilds of Southwest Tasmania and other remote regions around the world, both for work and recreation - yet there are still many places here I’m yet to discover, whether on foot or by water.

I began guiding bushwalks on the Southwest Cape and South Coast tracks back in 1987, and I’ve kept coming back ever since. The raw wildness of the landscape, its ever-changing weather and the deep sense of history continue to inspire me.

Guiding allows me to blend work and play in my favourite place on Earth, and I feel lucky to share it with others - helping guests on Par Avion tours develop their own connection to this extraordinary region and to wild places more broadly.

One moment that perfectly captures its magic for me was seeing Bathurst Harbour in absolute mirror-calm conditions on a completely windless, sunny day - an experience that stays with you for a lifetime.

Meet the Guides: Peter

My name is Peter Marmion, I have been guiding at Port Davey for 35 years and for Par Avion for 14 years. So long overdue for long service leave! I love working in such a fine team and that is one of the main reasons I keep returning to lead people on day trips and camps. The other main reason is that I am beguiled by the Southwest and love sharing my love of the place with guests.

My first trip to the Southwest was in 1973 and I have carried a camera with me on every trip since. This interest in photography and storytelling was the catalyst for me producing a book about Port Davey called Hidden Worlds. I have recently completed a circumnavigation of Tasmania’s coastline on foot and that journey is the focus of another book to be released soon.
I am the Secretary of the Friends of the Orange-bellied Parrot and the Friends of Melaleuca and am proud of the support Par Avion gives to both groups.

I have so many fond memories of guiding in the Southwest. Wildlife encounters are at the forefront of those memories. Sighting the elusive Azure Kingfisher is always a highlight. So was seeing 80 of the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrots in the one tree. We regularly sight the majestic White-bellied Sea Eagle, large pods of dolphins, rafts of Short-tailed Shearwaters and even the occasional whale.

I love working for Par Avion in Southwest Tasmania and feel privileged to have had such rich experiences in my remote workplace.

Meet the Guides: Gabby

Gabby is one of the friendly faces who brings each adventure or tour to life. With a genuine passion for creating meaningful experiences and a love for the outdoors, she is dedicated to making every journey both memorable and enjoyable.

Known for her positive energy and approachable nature, Gabby is always ready to lend a hand, share a story, or guide you through something new. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning for another adventure, she works to ensure you feel welcomed, supported, and part of the experience from the very beginning.

Here’s a little about Gabby in her own words:
I'm an Antarctic scientist working in Hobart, but when I'm not in town, I'm usually somewhere in the Southwest walking, sailing or guiding. I grew up in Tassie and first visited Melaleuca as a teenager to walk the South Coast track, and like most people I fell in love straight away! Since then I've been taking any opportunity I can to make it to the southwest and taking tours around Port Davey for the last three seasons has been by far my favorite way to do it because I get to share my stoke for this amazing place with people, some who are seeing it for the first time.

I think helping people to experience this gem of the TWWHA and the tens of thousands of years of human history attached to it is so important for its continued protection.

My most memorable recent experience at the camp was an intense battle of wits with a local quoll, where I only just prevented him from taking off with our dinner!
