Ports North is responsible for leading nine regional and remote ports in Far North Queensland. We are one of the most diverse port operators in the country, dedicated to creating economic opportunities and connecting communities. Our network extends across maritime sectors including trade, transport, tourism, marine services and defence. It means we can significantly impact social and environmenta

l sustainability within the communities where we work and across our industry. With a significant presence in Cairns, we are positioned at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef welcoming visitors from around the world. We attract major cruise liners and international superyachts benefitting local businesses and we are home to a growing maritime repair, maintenance and overhaul sector. We make sure kids can be ferried to school in the Torres Strait, and critical minerals and bulk commodities can be shipped direct from remote parts of the Cape to the world. We maintain and invest in infrastructure that creates possibilities for everyone, from families and small businesses to global corporations. Our business is made up of more than 90 staff including port service officers, maintenance crew, project and property managers, marine pilots, compliance and community engagement specialists. We encourage a culture of performance, where our people are clear about expectations and can make decisions that benefit local communities. Ports North is a Queensland Government-Owned Corporation (GOC) responsible to the Hon Brent Mickelberg, Minister for Transport and Main Roads and the Hon Rosslyn Bates, Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training. GOCs are services identified as essential to the economy, providing critical infrastructure to the state. What to expect from us:

It’s a full house at the Port of Cairns this week — with fuel ships, fertiliser, gas and sugar vessels all alongside.

This is the lesser-known side of port operations, keeping important commodities moving and an essential part of how the region runs — making sure vital supplies reach communities, supporting the industries people across North Queensland rely on every day.

A special welcome to the crew from the Solomon Islands aboard Gilbert Toropo — we hope you enjoy your time in Cairns. 👋⚓

We’re making improvements to our Trinity Wharf car park (in front of Hemmingway’s) to keep it safe and easy to use. 🚗✨

From 18–28 May (weather permitting) the car park will be partially closed in stages while we complete resealing and line marking.

These works help protect the surface, improve safety, and create clearer, more accessible parking spaces. Traffic management will be in place throughout the works.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we deliver a better experience for all users.

The Cairns Shipping Development Project didn’t just deepen and widen the channel to support cruise visitation, it also came with a commitment to improve the health of our state’s environment. 🌊💙

In 2022, Ports North committed to supporting an innovative, market‑based approach to catchment restoration through the Reef Credit Scheme. Today, it’s great to see that work making a real difference.

By backing the Bowen Gully Rehabilitation Project, the first fine‑sediment reduction project of its kind registered with Eco Markets Australia, we’re helping reduce sediment entering Great Barrier Reef catchment waterways and supporting practical, on‑ground restoration with Queensland landholders.

It’s rewarding to see the project delivering benefits for both our region’s tourism economy and the long‑term health of the Reef. Cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and stronger resilience for the future. 🌿✨

As the peak cruise season wraps up, we’re taking a moment to reflect on an outstanding period for Cairns.

Between November and April, the Port of Cairns welcomed over 70,000 passengers and crew and hosted 50 cruise ship calls, supported by exceptional feedback from visitors and operators.

This strong performance reinforces Cairns’ position as a world‑class cruise destination, and we’re already looking ahead to the coming seasons with confidence.

Even better, Cairns continues to receive cruise ships year‑round, ensuring ongoing economic benefits for local businesses and the wider community.

A successful wrap on the peak season, with an exciting horizon ahead.

Cairns is turning it on today with a two cruise ships in port! 🚢✨

We’re thrilled to welcome back one of our regular favourites, Carnival Encounter, alongside the stunning Vista, making her maiden voyage in Australian waters. 🌏

Vista’s visit is part of an epic 180-day around-the-world journey—after soaking up the tropics here in Cairns, she’s continuing on to Singapore after her Australian leg. Not a bad itinerary!

With more than 5,000 passengers and crew in town today, there’s a great sense of excitement across the city as visitors experience our region, rain or shine. 🌧️🌴

One of the things passengers and crew love most about Cairns is the port’s direct access to the city, stepping off the ship and straight into the heart of everything our region has to offer.

Some great fishing action at Cairns Marlin Marina this week, along the designated fishing zone at Sailfish Quay — and plenty of quality catches coming in 🎣

A friendly reminder to please fish within the designated fishing zones. So far this year, we’ve collected a number of discarded lures and lines — these can end up tangled in infrastructure, impact fuel and power lines, and pose a real safety risk to crew and marina staff.

Let’s keep the Marina safe and enjoyable for everyone.

If you’re heading down to the Marina over the Easter break, we hope you land a beauty!

Cairns is buzzing with international naval activity this week, with two visiting crews in town.

🇹🇭 The crew of HTMS Naresuan is alongside in Cairns for its first-ever visit, returning home after proudly participating in the Royal Australian Navy’s 125th Anniversary Fleet Review in Sydney.

🇻🇳 At HMAS Cairns, the crew of Vietnamese frigate Quang Trung (HQ-016) has also arrived, fresh from Exercise Kakadu 2026 and their involvement in the RAN’s anniversary celebrations—demonstrating the strength of regional cooperation and shared capability.

Together, these visits highlight the Port of Cairns’ growing role in supporting maritime collaboration, strengthening Indo-Pacific partnerships, and enabling world-class naval engagement.

A very warm welcome to both crews!
