Reflection Post.
It's day 100 of our trip with one week left before getting home
Are we excited? Yes, but we are also sad at closing this travel chapter.
We have enjoyed our journey for the most part and would do it again in a heartbeat - probably when the kids are older and more independent. Parenting is hard enough at home and more challenging on the road without all our go-to activites/distractions. We were definitely ambitious in our plan requiring to move sites every 1-3 nights. This was too quick for our kids and we found them to be grumpier/acting out more on those one nighters. I definitely lost the iPad battle on more than one occasion!
The Op4 has been really great - it really does have quite a lot of floor space when it's inflated with the annex attached and doesn't feel to crammed especially with the high ceilings. With the 4 of us it would be nice to have additional storage like in a van, but we have managed. We did only take the butt cushions and not the backs to save space which enabled us to store stuff on the floor at packdown thereby keeping it off the roof racks.
'Grub' has really performed well on all the corrugations including the sh*tty 240km road between Ivanhoe and Menindee (don't do it - avoid!), the Oodnadatta Track and Gibb River Road. We have really only had minor damage like the cracked reflectors, chipped paint, light strips breaking etc. - the car took more hits than the camper. The kitchen slide isn't the best at sliding anymore after loosing a bolt/roller at the end, and the silicone has weathered meaning the entire stove top moves about slightly.
Budget wise we have probably gone over, but as other travellers have said, it's hard and sometimes depressing constantly monitoring the budget. Some days we spend a lot but other days we spend next to nothing. At the end of the day we have been able to enjoy our trip and haven't felt like we have missed out on anything because of money (have missed some things purely because of the kids ages). By the time we get home I think the trip would have cost around $22k.
All in all this trip has been really amazing, meeting lots of people and having fun experiences like seeing the sunrise/sunset over Uluru and the Olgas, swimming with crocodiles, riding camels, seeing Horizontal Falls.
10/10 would go again.
