🚫 Black Water Discharge in Moreton Bay – Know the Rules ⚓

Protecting the waters we love starts with responsible boating. In areas like Moreton Bay, strict regulations apply to the discharge of sewage (black water) from vessels—and for good reason.

According to Maritime Safety Queensland guidelines:

🔹 Untreated sewage must NOT be discharged in restricted waters
🔹 A macerator system must be fitted to help treat sewage before discharge
🔹 Discharge is only permitted in designated offshore areas, well clear of sensitive marine environments

These rules help protect:
🌊 Water quality
🐢 Marine life
🏖️ Recreational areas we all enjoy

If your vessel doesn’t have a compliant system, consider upgrading or using pump-out facilities where available. A pot-a-potty system is also a cheap alterative. Responsible waste management isn’t just about compliance—it’s about preserving our waterways for future generations.

🔥 Fire Safety Onboard – A Timely Reminder 🔥

With the recent incidents of fire onboard vessels, it is important to be aware that fire at sea can escalate quickly and with devastating consequences.

Take a moment to check your vessel:

✅ Know the location of all fire extinguishers and fire blankets
✅ Ensure extinguishers are accessible and not obstructed
✅ Check pressure gauges on fire extinguishers are in the green
✅ Confirm extinguishers are in-date and have current inspection tags
✅ Report any missing, damaged/rusty or discharged extinguishers immediately
✅ Keep engine rooms, galleys and electrical spaces clean and tidy
✅ Avoid overloading electrical circuits and power boards
✅ Follow safe fuel handling and refuelling procedures

Regular fire extinguisher inspections, good housekeeping, and crew awareness save lives.

When a small vessel passes a larger vessel, there’s more going on than just “a bit of wash”.

Large vessels displace a huge volume of water, and as they move they create strong hydrodynamic forces that can affect smaller boats nearby — even if the big vessel looks like it’s moving slowly.

✅ What can happen to the small vessel:
Sudden pull towards the larger vessel (suction effect)
Unexpected yaw / loss of steering
Strong wake and turbulence
Risk of collision
Risk of capsize or crew overboard
Props and rudders losing efficiency due to disturbed water flow

⚠️ These forces are amplified in:
- Narrow channels
- Shallow water / low tide
- Constricted waterways / dredged leads
- Areas with rock walls or channel edges

💡 Safety tips for small vessel operators:
✅ Give large vessels maximum clearance
✅ Slow down early and keep your boat settled
✅ Avoid passing close in shallow or narrow channels
✅ Be ready for unexpected movement (hands on helm!)
✅ Keep crew seated + hold on
✅ If unsure — wait. Let the big vessel go first.

Remember: It’s not just the wake — it’s the water movement around the hull.
