The container turned up. The key didn't.

Somebody, somewhere, had it. It was not on the wharf and it was not coming. What was on the container was a lock advertised as bolt cutter proof, and it turned out to be telling the truth.

This is most of the job, honestly. Not the plan. The bit after the plan stops working.

What is the most ridiculous thing that has ever held up your freight?

MPI food certified in Auckland and Christchurch, for ambient storage.

That last word is the important one, so we are putting it in the first line rather than the small print. Ambient means dry goods at normal warehouse temperature. It does not mean chilled and it does not mean frozen, and if you need either of those you need somewhere else.

We say it that plainly because scope is exactly where food logistics goes wrong. Somebody asks whether you are MPI certified, hears yes, and assumes it covers their product. Then their product spends a weekend at the wrong temperature.

If your goods are ambient, we are certified for them in both cities. If they are not, tell us early and we will say so.

Most people find out their product is classified as dangerous goods at the worst possible moment, which is after it has already been booked onto a flight.

The category is much wider than it sounds. Batteries are in it. So is anything pressurised, anything flammable, and a surprising amount of ordinary cosmetics.

Being IATA certified means the declaration that goes with your freight is prepared and signed by somebody trained and audited to do it, rather than filled in hopefully and sent.

The rules for flying dangerous goods run to a book two inches thick.

Method Global is certified by IATA to certify dangerous goods for air cargo, and that book is the reason the job takes as long as it does.

Getting it right means the correct outer box, the correct internal packaging, leak proof containers where they are needed, and labelling that will survive the whole transit. Then it is booked to meet the timeframe you actually need.

Getting it wrong means delay. And on time critical freight, a delay is rarely just a delay.

If you are shipping anything classed as dangerous, perishable or biological, it is worth asking who is certifying it and against what.

An aircraft engine does not travel like other freight.

The weight decides the trailer. The route has to be worked out before anyone drives it, because not every road will take it. And there are requirements attached to the engine itself that have nothing to do with logistics and everything to do with the aircraft it goes back onto.

This is the freight most companies push away. It is the part of the job Method Global is built around, alongside dangerous goods, perishables and high value beverages.

Someone ordered a load of courier bags. Which now have to be couriered. In a courier bag.

We stood there for a second.

That is the job though. Things turn up, things go out, and most of the time they make sense.

What is the strangest thing you have ever shipped? We will go first in the comments, because we have packed some genuinely unbelievable things, and it is nearly always the same story: somebody saved four dollars on packaging and cost themselves the shipment.

This one is useful whether or not you ever ring us.

Print the list. Score whoever handles your stock against it right now. If most of these are things you would have to request specially, that tells you something, and it is not really about reporting.

Just had a shipment go badly wrong? Send this to whoever is dealing with it.

"Can you quote me to move a pallet across?"

We could answer that in thirty seconds. Most will. The number comes back fast, it looks competitive, and nobody has asked you a single thing about what is actually on the pallet.

That is where it goes wrong. Without the right questions the freight still moves, it just arrives too late, too slow, too expensive, too hot or too cold. The quote was never the hard part.

Method Global asks first, then quotes. 300+ import and export shipments a month across New Zealand and Australia, since 2008.

The test of whether a warehouse is actually connected to your business is simple: how many times does one order get typed in by a human?

If the answer is more than zero, that is where your errors come from. Not carelessness. Retyping.

Orders flow in, tracking flows back, and other packages connect the same way if you are not on Shopify.

What does your order still get typed into by hand?

All of this is wh***ey, and it is going into one container.

Filling a container is not stacking pallets until the doors shut. Weight has to sit right so it is safe on the road. Fragile freight goes where it will survive the trip. Every item is accounted for before anything closes.

The seal is the last thing that happens, and it is the part nobody ever sees.
