💡 The war in the Middle East has, perversely, achieved something that decades of government policy hasn’t – bringing hydrogen and diesel prices close to parity, Hiringa Energy’s Ryan McDonald wryly observed in his address at HVIA’s TruckShowX 2026 conference on May 18-19 .

⛽ Purely on that metric, it’s an encouraging development for the New Zealand-based hydrogen fuel producer and distributor as it works hard to build out a heavy vehicle hydrogen refuelling network in Australia.

🚛 Across the Tasman, the company has developed a network of four refuelling stations throughout the north island, servicing heavy-duty long-haul trucks operated by operators including NZ Post, TR Group and HW Richardson Group

💰 Earlier this year, Hiringa was awarded a $788,000 grant from the NSW Government to progress Australia’s first green hydrogen refuelling corridor, including selecting the appropriate refuelling technology, securing approvals for infrastructure works, and identify the network’s future customers.

🛣️ The initial focus will be developing three sites along the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane, which are expected to be online Q4 2028. The company has plans for another 10 refuelling sites by 2030, to connect major freight corridors between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

🚨 The pace of change facing transport operators is only going to accelerate, Julie Russell, a director and third-generation member of family-owned Russell Transport warned in her opening address to HVIA’s TruckShowX 2026 conference on May 18-19.

🗣️ “When I reflect back across my time in the industry, I see a pace of change that appears to be getting faster, and disruptions that are both unpredictable and often occurring at the same time,” said Julie, who is also Deputy Chair of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

🚛 “My family has been in the road transport industry for over 100 years, and in this time we have seen enormous change across the societal, cultural, political, regulatory and technological landscape.

🌏 “Even on the geopolitical front, there has been changes which has affected how we operate and how our supply chains function.

🐎 “My grandfather’s first key decision was whether to go with the new technology of the day or stick with the horse and cart. The advancement of our heavy vehicle fleet from that decision onwards has evolved and continues to evolve in regard to the size of the vehicle, the different makes, models, the products we carry, and even our employment structures.

👩‍💻 “They all evolve as new technologies and standards were introduced.”

😆 It’s not quite ‘The Epic Split’ featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme – the viral commercial released in 2013 by Volvo Trucks to demonstrate the stability of its FM trucks using dynamic steering.

🏆 But it was epic enough for Mader Group to win the best selfie award judged by NTI’s Craig Carmody at TruckShowX 2026’s golf day held on Sunday, May 17 at Rydges Resort Hunter Valley.

🏌‍♂️ More than 50 eager attendees joined us ahead of the two-day conference for nine holes of fun and frivolity – as well as some serious golf (and networking).

👏 The gun team comprising VE Motion’s Dean Panos and James Morgan, TreviPay’s Piers Gorman and HVIA’s very own Harrison Hunkin were named the overall winning team; while Mark Lampard and Brad Yarwood from GoEV, Air Brake Systems Pty Ltd’s Glenn Hambleton and BetterFleet’s Russ Yell were judged the most enthusiastic.

⛳ Individual prizes were also awarded for closest to the pin (Jost’s Joey Coles) and loudest shirt (BetterFleet’s Russ Yell).

📸 From the comfort of his mototorised buggy, snapper Alastair Brook captured the shenanigans.
