Victoria is investing $124.5 million into a proposed Renewable Energy Terminal at the Port of Hastings to help launch offshore wind farms.

The idea is simple: use the port to receive and assemble large wind turbine parts before they’re installed out at sea.

The project was previously delayed due to environmental concerns, but updated plans are now being reviewed, with community input underway.

This development is key to the state’s clean energy goals, but timing is tight.

If approved, it could boost renewable energy, support jobs, and help power homes, while needing to carefully protect the local environment.

Air freight costs jumped 30% in April, hitting their highest level in over a year. But there are signs things may be starting to settle.

Earlier price spikes were largely driven by reduced flight capacity linked to disruptions in the Middle East. Now, as more planes return to service, supply is improving and prices are expected to gradually ease.

While costs won’t drop overnight, the market is beginning to rebalance. Global cargo capacity is close to normal levels again, and fuel supply issues haven’t significantly impacted long-haul flights so far.

For businesses that rely on air freight, this could mean fewer unexpected cost increases and a more stable outlook in the months ahead.

A cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz reported being attacked by multiple small craft, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre. All crew members are safe, but the incident adds to a growing pattern of maritime disruptions in the region, with at least two dozen attacks reported since the Iran war began.

The Strait remains highly tense, with Iran asserting control over passage and imposing conditions on shipping, while Western forces continue to emphasise freedom of navigation. No group has claimed responsibility.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts continue. Tehran is reviewing a US response to its latest ceasefire proposal but says it is not part of nuclear negotiations. Iran’s plan reportedly calls for sanctions relief, reduced US military presence, and an end to hostilities. US President Donald Trump has expressed scepticism about reaching a deal, while tensions at sea remain high despite a fragile ceasefire holding.

Australia’s fuel supply has shown signs of stabilisation, with petrol reserves rising to around 46 days following government action to secure additional imports. Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirmed improved stockpiles, supported by shipments arriving from the US, South Korea and Malaysia as global supply disruptions continue to impact shipping routes.

While petrol availability has improved and prices have eased slightly, diesel shortages remain a key concern for farmers, freight operators and regional communities, with costs still near record highs. The government has activated elements of its fuel security plan, releasing reserves and boosting supply chains, but some service stations continue to report outages.

Authorities say the situation is manageable, with further shipments expected in the coming weeks. However, industry groups warn ongoing diesel pressure could affect agriculture, logistics and broader inflation if conditions persist.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing up to $25.3 million to NewVolt to build Victoria’s first shared fast-charging network for electric trucks. Three open-access hubs will be established across Melbourne’s west, south-east, and northern suburbs, supporting 50–100 heavy and medium electric trucks in the first phase.

The initiative aims to decarbonise one of Australia’s hardest-to-abate sectors, reduce reliance on imported diesel, and improve energy security. By lowering infrastructure barriers, ARENA hopes to accelerate the transition to electric freight nationwide. The first charging hub is expected to open in late 2026, with the remaining hubs operational by 2027, providing fleets with reliable, renewable-powered fast charging.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is triggering major global supply chain disruptions, with around 30% of seaborne oil and 20% of LNG trade impacted. Prices are spiking – crude oil is up 47%, polypropylene 24%, and aluminium 10% – placing pressure on manufacturers across industries including automotive, chemicals, and electronics.

Rising transport and material costs are beginning to flow through to everyday goods, from food packaging to medical supplies. While some companies are temporarily absorbing costs, price increases are expected if disruptions persist.

Businesses are responding by rerouting shipments, securing alternative suppliers, and reassessing supply chain resilience, but many remain in a wait-and-see mode as the situation evolves.

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has launched a report in Parliament targeting DP World Australia’s AI automation plans, which could eliminate over 1,000 stevedoring jobs. The report highlights that the Dubai-owned port operator has paid no corporate tax in Australia for more than a decade, while automation decisions are directed by its global headquarters.

MUA frames AI-driven port operations as a sovereignty and national security issue, warning that outsourcing critical infrastructure to foreign-controlled systems heightens supply chain vulnerabilities amid global energy disruptions. The union urges statutory AI regulation, including manual override requirements, while government policy currently focuses on AI capability rather than sector-specific safeguards. The debate underscores broader concerns about automation, tax transparency, and control of strategic Australian infrastructure.
