🚫🎣 Upcoming seasonal closures for coral reef fin fish and Spanish mackerel

🐠 Coral reef fin fish:

The second annual coral reef fin fish closure begins Monday 17 November and continues until Friday 21 November 2025 inclusive, from the tip of Cape York, south to near Bundaberg (24°50’ south).

The closure period aligns with the new moon, when coral reef fin fish species such as emperor, cod and coral trout gather to spawn, giving them the best chance to reproduce.

🐟 Spanish mackerel (northern closure):

The second northern Spanish mackerel closed season begins Monday 17 November and continues until Monday 8 December 2025 inclusive, in east coast waters north of 22˚S (near Stanage Bay).

The closure period also aligns with new moon periods when this species gathers to spawn.

Anglers are prohibited from taking or possessing Spanish mackerel or coral reef fin fish in these waters during the closed season.
