The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the peak organisation for Australia’s motoring clubs and their 9.3 million members. You might expect transport to cost less in the regions than in Australia's capital cities.

But according to the AAA's latest Transport Affordability Index, that gap almost closed in the first quarter of 2026.

🏙️ Capital cities spent 15.6% of weekly income, down 0.2pts since Q4 2025
🏡 Regional centres spent 15.4%, steady since Q4 2025

Much of the cities' improvement came from public transport fare cuts, relief regional households didn't share.

Despite these changes, costs remain above pre-pandemic levels: 15.5% of the typical household's weekly income is spent on transport, compared with 13.9% in late 2019.

Fatigue is a factor in an estimated 20% of road crashes, and people who drive for work are overrepresented in crash statistics.

Whether you drive for work or simply to get around, we all need to manage fatigue so we don’t end up driving tired.

📈 Road deaths in Australia are still rising — but we still don’t know why.

In the 12 months to 30 April, 1,333 people died. That's 3.5% higher than in the previous corresponding period.

Last week, the Federal Government announced new funding for road safety research. The AAA looks forward to more details on the data-driven approach that the Government intends to fund, and to working with them to reverse the trend.

1,333 people died on Australian roads in the 12 months to 30 April 2026 — a 3.5% increase on the previous year, with pedestrian deaths up 9.9%, cyclist deaths up 9.3% and passenger deaths up 10.8%.

✅ Real-World Testing of light vehicles funded for another year

✅ Long-overdue investment in fuel security

❌ $3.8 billion cut to road investment funding

📊 New data reveals a continuing rise in Australian road deaths - the 34th consecutive month that the rolling 12-month toll has increased.

With no clear reason why, the 2026–27 Federal Budget must fund a pilot no-blame investigation into road deaths.
