As part of the National Road Safety Partnership Program’s (NRSPP) 2027 organisational
campaign, we are conducting research about road safety myths and misconceptions. We are inviting people over the age of 18 who drive regularly to participate in an anonymous online survey. This research will help us better understand drivers’ experiences, behaviours, responses and challenges when driving, and promote safe driving practices.

❓ How close does Australia’s top-selling medium SUV come to its reported fuel efficiency?

We put two 2026 RAV4 hybrids through real-world testing on Australian roads.

⛽ FWD: Used 2% more fuel
⛽ AWD: Used 6% more fuel

The AAA’s Real-World Testing Program has now independently tested 190 vehicles across all fuel types, showing how much fuel and energy popular cars really use on Australian roads.

Independent tests show how car windscreen fuel labels stack up on real Australian roads.

The latest data shows the MG ZS Vibe Turbo used 6% less fuel than its label, and the Kia K4 GT-Line came within 1%. Most other cars used more fuel than their windscreen label.

🚗 Road deaths have fallen, but Australia still remains off track.

Road deaths are 19.7% higher than when the National Road Safety Strategy began in 2021. The Strategy aims to halve road deaths by 2030.

The recent Review of the failing strategy highlights the need for greater Commonwealth leadership, and better use of data.

It will save lives.

Fuel excise is the tax on every litre you buy at the pump, and it's how Australia has paid for its roads for decades.

⚠️ More EVs and hybrids mean less fuel excise revenue
⚠️ Roads and charging infrastructure still need funding

The answer is a fairer, future-proof system.

✅ A road user charge for the vehicles that don't pay fuel excise
✅ A contribution from every road user, not just those filling up at the pump
✅ Better roads and charging infrastructure
✅ One long-term solution, not a series of patchwork fixes

Right now, drivers who buy fuel are funding the roads on their own. A road user charge brings everyone else in.

A new approach today, for the vehicles of tomorrow.

The AAA urges the Government to progress its Road User Charge so everyone who uses public roads helps pay for them.

🚨 The Governments' own review released today explains why Australia is not on track to meet its road safety targets.

The review highlights the need for greater Commonwealth leadership, and for a dramatic improvement in how data is used to guide both road spending and the delivery of actions that can save lives.

The AAA urges all governments to act on it with urgency.

⚠️ 1,313 people died on Australian roads in the 12 months to 31 August 2026. It was less than the previous year, but still 19.7% higher than the target.

No state or territory is on track to meet its target of halving road deaths by 2030. Ten months ago, the Commonwealth announced a review of the National Road Safety Strategy. But it still hasn’t released the findings.

📢 The AAA calls on the Government to release the review and explain what it will change to bring down Australia’s rising road toll.
